Bentley Bentayga: First Production SUV

"Bentley bentayga"

Bentley has launched some of the most spectacular looking cars worldwide. The brand is one of the most sought after luxury car brand. With the launch of various high-end offerings suited for plutocrats, the company has followed a rather different approach by announcing the launch of an upcoming SUV.

What’s Bentayga?

In January 2015, Bentley had officially unveiled the name Bentayga. Inspired by Taiga, the world’s largest transcontinental snow forest, and composing the first four letters of Bentley comes the name Bentayga. Bentley had supposedly drawn inspiration from the rugged peak of the Roque Bentayga in Gran Canaria, Canary Island.

The Bentayga is a four seat, five-door luxury SUV that has a uni-body construction. This car is a VW offering and it does make perfect sense that Volkswagen had its W12 engine mated to this beast SUV. This all wheel drive vehicle is based on the Volkswagen Group MLB platform, same as the one used in the 2nd generation Audi Q7.

The Bentayga is the company’s first production SUV and is an evolution of the 2012 Bentley EXP 9 F concept car.

The design team behind the making of this marvel had pushed limits to deliver an innovative design that carries a beautifully sculpted one-piece fender that includes a stunning light design. Bentley employed all of the VW Group’s experience in aluminum with hot super form technology used to shape the huge fender panel with enough precision to allow a crease with a 3mm radius plus a delightful sculpting that runs alongside it. The Bentayga’s twin headlights provide the perfect balance of technology and jewellery’ with knurled beveling around the inside and a Bentley logo embedded in the LED lights. The precision with which the headlights are recessed in the fender panel is again down to the super form process, yet the lenses sit flush with the bodywork.

The outer LED daytime running lights change color to act as indicators, while the high-pressure headlamp washers actually sit in the centre of the outer lights. The Bentayga is 5141mm long, 1742 high and 2223mm wide – bigger in every respect than either the Q7 or the Cayenne, but slightly shorter and a lot lower than a Range Rover Sport. The exterior design makes the Bentayga the most luxurious SUV in the world.

Intricate level of attention has gone into the interior as Bentley’s head of interior design Darren Day explains. “We’ve used a similar ‘winged’ design to the dash as in Mulsanne and GT, but with upper and lower wings,” he told us, “And we’ve worked hard to integrate the technology in a Bentley way.”

The interior cabin is opulent as a king’s throne. The innards are perfect enough to make you forget what’s on the outside. To start with, the car has Fifteen veneered pieces of wood trim that go into the cabin and the customers have the liberty to choose among 7-different varieties of dead tree to accent one of 15 shades of naturally tanned bull hide. The leather covers for this SUV are 22-way adjustable (that’s right, twenty two way adjustable) front chairs with massage functionality. It also has 18-way adjustable rear seats in 4-place models. To add to comfort, there is a rear bench facility too. And if you need more from an impromptu ride towards a lovely sunset or a serene locale, you get a folding “even seat”that is upholstered to match the Bentayga’s interior.

To add to this, the Bentayga has an 8-inch touch screen that gains access to the infotainment system that includes night vision and a head-up display. It also includes safety features such as Traffic sign recognition, adaptive cruise control and self-parking.Rear seat passengers can get a Bentley-branded 10.2-inch Android tablet, which will make use of on-board wifi.Rear passengers get the same level of opulence as front seat passengers.

Engine and performance:

The Bentayga will be the first car to receive Bentley;s new Twin-turbo W12 engine. The 6.0 L twin-turbo will have an estimated 600 hp and 900 Nm of torque. This will enable the bentayga to thrust from 0 to 100 kmph under 5 seconds. This vehicle has an 8-speed transmission that splits torque with 60% to rear and 40% to the front. The Bentayga can touch a maximum speed of a whooping 301 kmph. The car carries an active anti-roll system (EWAS) that reduces the body roll.

The official price of the Bentayga is in the dark. However, with all the speculated prices floating around the internet, the Bentayga should be aggressively priced in the likes of a Rolls Royce.

Wrap up:

Interestingly enough, the Bentayga was a showstopper at the Frankfurt Motor show this year. Bentley is said to have invested £800 million in a new facility in Crewe. It has also hired 1000 employees to meet the demand for 3000 to 4000 SUV’s annually.

Virtual Racers From the World of Gran Turismo

Mercedes Benz AMG Vision Gran Turismo

Ideas are quite often difficult to reproduce in reality. Though the sheer vastness of our imagination is almost unimaginable, the laws of physics and mathematics continually inhibit our own fantasies. A major reason behind the massive success of video games is the fact that the video game world provides a way out for our reveries. Endless possibilities combined with an infinite number of ways to adjust the laws of nature has allowed the gaming industry to design beautiful visual constructs previously only comprehensible within the mind’s eye .

Gran Turismo is one such game. A PlayStation exclusive, Gran Turismo has become an extremely popular racing franchise renowned for its realistic racing dynamics as well as an impressive aggregation of locale and cars to choose from. Although Need For Speed is still right on top in the racing genre, GT has been recognized as one of the few games that adhere very closely to real life physics and thus acting as more of a focused simulator than an out and out racing arcade game.

For the franchise’s sixth release, Gran Turismo 6, the studio behind the game has taken a different route. Unlike most racing games that source their car range from existing models or concepts, Polyphony Digital, the developers behind the game approached design firms and major car manufacturers to create concepts exclusively for the game. What came soon after was a stunning amalgam of concepts showcasing what auto-makers are capable of, if it weren’t for feasibility studies or budget constraints.

1. Mercedes Benz AMG Vision Gran Turismo:

The first and still the wildest, Mercedes Benz unveiled the AMG Vision Gran Turismo in the flesh (metal?) earlier this year at the LA Auto Show. A purposeful show of magnificence, the AMG Vision GT is no wallflower. Mercedes Benz’s addition for the PlayStation racer is powered by a twin turbocharged V8 that produces 585 HP.

2. BMW Vision Gran Turismo:

Unlike Mercedes’ concept, BMW’s Vision Gran Turismo concept is a far more restrained offering from Germany. Based off the current gen 2 Series, the Vision GT is a focused track ready grand tourer. Draped in classic BMW M Division livery, the Vision GT paints a picture of what the manufacturer could produce in an ideal automotive world. BMW has always been known for developing some of the most well balanced sports cars of this generation. And The Vision Gran Turismo is no exception. Built for the track, the BMW’s take on an ideal sports car looks more production ready than most concepts unveiled by manufacturers at motor shows.

Powering the virtual racer is a 3.0 L turbocharged straight six engine that produces 549 HP and a whopping 677 Nm of torque.

3. Mitsubishi Concept XR-PHEV Evolution Vision Gran Turismo:

Japanese car maker Mitsubishi has slowly been pulling models from its lineup across the globe. Falling sales figures and the recent announcement of the discontinuation of the company’s critically acclaimed Lancer Evolution has left fans of the legendary rally marque second guessing about the car maker’s future. However, that hasn’t stopped our beloved Mitsubishi from unveiling a no-holds barred Evolution.

The Concept  XR-PHEV Evolution Vision Gran Turismo is a hunkered down track focused hybrid. The flared wheel arches and lowered stance of the saloon hint at a more racing oriented approach rather than a rally driven development.

4. Volkswagen GTI Roadster Vision Gran Turismo:

VW’s series of hot hatchbacks have been extremely popular since the ’80s. The German car maker’s Golf and Sirocco hot hatches offer good performance at affordable rates. For the Gran Turismo however, the German car maker has gone all out.

Powering the GTI Roadster is a 3.0 L twin turbocharged V6 that puts out a mammoth 500 HP and 600 Nm of torque. The massive power from such a small car allows the GTI to hit 0-100 km/h in 3.2 seconds.

5. Nissan Concept 2020 Vision Gran Turismo:

A glimpse into the future of Nissan’s critically acclaimed GT-R, the 2020 Vision Gran Turismo may soon become a reality in the near future. Unlike most cars featured in this article, the Nissan Concept 2020 Vision GT may be in the pipelines as a future product. The 2020 Vision concept borrows design elements from the current GT-R as well as some retro design cues closely resembling the IDx Freeflow revealed earlier this year.

6. Aston Martin DP-100 Vision Gran Turismo:

Unveiled at the Goodwood Festival of Speed earlier this year, Aston Martin’s Utopian supercar is a mid engined V12 rocketship. Unlike most Aston Martin’s, the DP-100 is more of a racer than a grand tourer. The twin turbocharged 6.0 L V12 produces a whopping 800 HP making it the most powerful Aston Martin ever conceived. Similar to an earlier concept, the DP-100 will influence future design languages implemented by the English marque.

7. Toyota FT-1 Vision Gran Turismo:

The final addition to an insane list of cars, the Toyota FT-1 Vision Gran Turismo is a fitting tribute to the once mighty Supra. Based of a recent Supra concept, the FT-1 is a return to its roots. Since 2007, Toyota has regressed to making family MUVs and cheap sedans to maintain profits. The days of tarmac shredding Supra’s and Celica’s have come to close. However, with the new FT-1 Vision GT, the Japanese automaker may make a return into the world of burnouts and drifting. A world we welcome with arms wide open.

Flying cars by Terrafugia

Have you ever imagined that your car can even fly?

With raising concerns over future mobility solutions, automotive industry is thinking in terms of future fuels, compact cars and electric vehicles. One such future mobility solution which is unique and exciting is the “Flying Car”. A company named “Terrafugia” has come up with this brilliant concept of allowing a car to fly. Imagine a car which can travel on-road as well as fly whenever you want. This will be a dream for many auto enthusiasts.

Terrafugia has made this dream a reality by making a car to transform from a conventional car to a flying car. Terrafugia has the vision of making it as a future mode of personal transportation. We will go through the models of flying cars proposed by Terrafugia.

The first product named “Transition” proves their concept of Flying Cars. The state of the art technology in Transition demonstrates the flying and driving features of the vehicle. The car is powered by 100hp Rotax 912iS Engine .It is equipped with glass cockpits avionic , composite body and various intelligent mechanisms to drive and fly. For driving, similar to conventional cars it has the accelerator and brake pedals and for flying sticks and rudder pedals are involved for flight filled with fun. With its flying feature even you will not be missing your trips due to unfavorable weather.

The engine for driving mode runs on free leaded gasoline and it also drives the propeller required for flight mode. It has different dimensions in flying and driving mode. For driving mode, it is 22m tall, 23m wide and 6m long and for flying mode it is 2m tall, 8m wingspan (wing allows lift of the vehicle) and 6 m long. More wingspan is required in order to achieve lifting of the vehicle during flight mode. The maximum payload is 227 kg with a cruising speed of 160 kmph. Its mileage on-road comes out to be 6.7 l/100km. The range of the vehicle is 660 km with 30 minutes of fuel in reserve.

The electro-mechanical folding allows transition from road to flying car. It has two seats side by side and is rear wheel drive for road. Being a flying car, there might be many people having  risks or doubts regarding the safety aspects of the vehicle. From safety point of view, driver can be used for abnormal weather and also the whole vehicle will act as a transition. Also, air bags are also installed at passenger and driver locations. Golf club cargos can also be taken in the vehicle. Avionics required during flying session involves completely modern glass. The factory has been built for Transition and are ready to fly. With more developing concepts of the flying cars, the cost effectiveness will improve.

With “Transition” coming on time,Terrafugia is planning for more range of products. One of which is the TF-X with main focus on safety belts, simplicity and easy usage as personal transport.Electric drive will power the vehicle on road.  Like Transition, it also has full vehicle with parachute system and can be used by the driver . When flying, an automatic notification of problems can be directly informed to the authorities.  The simple upcoming design will allow any one to learn it in 5 hours.

The flying can be selected as manual or even auto pilot mode. It will be able to accommodate four passengers as conventional comfort cars and can go upto 500 miles without any issues in one go. Its compact structure allows its storage in small garages.  A option of auto landing helps in case of emergency landing. If the user is not responsive during flying, the system can go for searching of the landing options and then going on for  a safe landing. If the space is not effective, the landing can be aborted immediately. The development of  TF-X is expected for 8-12 years. Installed licenses in car will help in increasing the landing zone database.

Transition will finish earlier when compared to TF-X. Imagine having a flying car and going from the top of a long traffic jam on highways. This would make anyone excited about Flying Cars. The main thing to watch is about the safety aspects of the vehicle and their approval by the competent authorities. These vehicles definitely have the potential of becoming the future mobility solutions. With shorter runways required the vehicle can go for take off and landing and thereby ensuring a safe flight.

The transition of the car from road driving to flying condition and vice versa is exciting to watch and allows the wings to open for generating the lift force.
