Faceoff: Fiat Punto Evo vs Volkswagen Polo

fiat punto evo

There used to be a time when the hatchback was viewed as a cheap and practical option for most Indians. Whether it be fuel efficiency you’re finicky about or the ability to find a parking spot with ease, the humble hatchback came forward and unobtrusively stood up to the challenge. With pockets getting deeper and manufacturers setting up local manufacturing units, hatchbacks have taken on a more flamboyant air. They’re still city-friendly, capable of making it through traffic without much hassle, and able to fit the average family. But it achieves looking a lot better and performing unlike before as well.

The competition in the hatchback segment is fierce, understandably. The most recent rivalry is that between the new Fiat Punto Evo and the Volkswagen Polo. Each of these are worthy competitors and how things turn out in the market is interesting to watch. The Fiat Punto Evo is easily the smartest car in its class, but others have woken up to the reality that this doesn’t mean it is a car to be trifled with. Here’s how the the new Fiat Punto Evo performs when pitted against the seasoned Volkswagen Polo.

EXTERIOR

Both the cars have evolved a lot when it comes to their exterior designing. It seems like these manufacturers have worked a lot on ensuring that the appeal begins with a first look at the car. The Fiat Punto Evo may be diminutive but it is a very good-looking compact car. The high tensile steel body assures high end safety for the vehicle. The Volkswagen Polo is beautifully designed with a sophisticated and stylish front grille, artistic dual beam headlights covered with posh black layer, distinctive design of its company logo on the trunk, 15 inch alloy wheels and inventively styled tail lights. The Punto Evo comes off looking like the better car overall.

INTERIORS

Both the cars share many similar features inside the cabin. This includes a 2-DIN music system, climate control and also audio and multimedia controls which have been mounted on the steering wheel in both cars. However, the Fiat Punto Evo goes a step further, adding certain crucial features such as Rear AC Vents, SMS read out and ambient lighting. The other big advantage which the Punto Evo has over Volkswagen Polo is in terms of interior space. The rear seat in Volkswagen Polo lacks sufficient leg room and the seat does not have flip fold facility as on the Fiat Punto Evo. The luggage space on both cars is almost the same.

ENGINE & PERFORMANCE

The most noticeable change in the new Volkswagen Polo is the upgraded engine. It now comes with a 1.5 liter diesel mill, which delivers 90PS and a peak torque of 230Nm. The new Fiat Punto Evo puts out 93PS of power and 209 Nm of torque. These cars are pretty much on even keel on the power front. The Punto Evo has an edge given its higher ground clearance at 185mm, while it is only 165mm on the Polo. It also has bigger 16 inch wheels, hydraulic power steering, and a much better driving field. Despite this, when it comes to real-world handling, there is no beating the Polo. It may be underpowered on paper, but the smooth power delivery and easy to handle gearbox render it a joy to drive.

FUEL EFFICIENCY AND VALUE FOR MONEY

Talking in terms of the fuel efficiency the Fiat Punto Evo again stands slightly ahead of the Volkswagen Polo as it gives a mileage of 20.5kmpl, as opposed to the 20.1kmpl in Volkswagen Polo. When it comes to the value for money proposition, it isn’t so simple which car comes off the better. The fully loaded and spacious Fiat Punto Evo with the 90HP engine is priced at Rs. 7.20lakhs. The stylish and suave Volkswagen Polo is priced at Rs. 7.37 lakhs. The price difference is minimal and isn’t a sufficient parameter to tell which car offers the better overall package.

VERDICT

It’s going to be a tough call between the two as they both are distinctively designed, have unbeatable and world class features in terms of quality. But the Punto Evo not just offers a value for money, but it’s also much more spacious and offers features too. Simultaneously it’s also evident that the Polo has a considerable edge over the Punto Evo in terms of engine power and looks.

As with most other decisions, this one comes down to preference. The Punto Evo has the creature comforts but not so much the performance. It does seem to offer slightly better interiors. However, for those who want a car that is a looker and the ability to experience the famed goodness of German engineering, the Volkswagen Polo is the way to go.

Nissan Qashqai – a review

Nissan is one of the few automobile companies which are known for superior and elegant design. This Japan based automobile company is now targeting the MPV (Multi-Purpose Vehicle) segment with its new release Qashqai. Nissan Qashqai was one of the first cars to combine 4×4 styling with hatchback running costs and this formula from Nissan quickly turned it into a best-seller concept.

In 2006 Qashqai kick started the year with a cross-over Qashqai (old). With the new version of Qashqai, Nissan is all set to do the same once again. The latest model is built on the same model in par with the old Qashqai model offering more style, sharper handling space, along with better fuel economy and new equipment’s under the skin to make this car more trendy and classy.

So let’s dive in to the review to understand the aspects of the car and come to a point where we can decide whether this car has enough power packed to call it a new cross-over or just an ordinary release.

Before going to preview, here are the technical specifications of the Nissan Qashqai

Review: Styling

Exterior:

When it comes to the exteriors the new Qashqai has a better design when compared to the old Qashqai with in-detail and sharp looks. In front, the Nissan Qashqai features a sharp nose with angular headlamps and ravishing running lights made from LED. The twin chrome bars adds a new and trendy look and at back the LED tail-lamps wrap around the corners of the car and on the tailgate makes the car more elegant and classy. The Qashqai body is built with a smooth stream line with advanced aerodynamics with active elements. By looking into all this we can observe that Nissan has done a great rework when it comes to the car’s looks. It truly sets a new benchmark for the crossover design.

Interior:

When it comes to the interiors, Nissan has reinvented the aspects of the car to make it more suitable for family rides. Qashqai interiors are neatly designed with plenty of soft-touch plastics. All the controls are cleverly placed so the driver feels more comfortable using them. The car’s raised height level gives the driver an excellent view of the road and by doing this Nissan has certainly raised the driving levels. The dash board is neatly furnished with an LCD monitor from which the user can perform all the actions in the car with ease.

The company has added another innovative feature to the Nissan Qashqai which is called as the Active Grille Shutter system. This intelligent technology maximizes the cars aerodynamic efficiency by closing off the airflow through the radiator when it is not needed. The grille shutter automatically shuts at speeds over 30kph and only opens if sensors detect that the engine needs cooling and when it cools it is automatically shut again. This is a new feature invented by Nissan and is debuting with this car.

Review: Driving Performance & Engine

When it comes to the engine, Qashqai has 3 variant 1.6-Litres Diesel (High-range), 1.5-Litres Diesel (Mid-range), 1.2-Litres Petrol (Low-range). The 1.5-Litres Diesel engine can reach 0-60mph in 12.4 seconds which is not a considerable range for a car like this. If you are a guy who likes speed and is willing to pay for the speed the 1.6-Litres Diesel is the best choice to give this car a good speed as the 1.6-Litres Diesel engine can reach 0-60mph in just 10.5 seconds while the low end 1.2-Litres petrol can reach 0-60mph in 11.3 seconds.

Both 1.6-Litres and 1.5-Litres Diesel engines are quite good for a car like this, but 1.5-Litres Diesel is worth for its price tag while the high end has a slight high price tag. With this engine the driving experience is smooth and the greatest advantage that lies in this is that the fuel-economy is high. The precise combination of throttle response with 6 speed gear box delivers a great driving at experience. The turnings on the city roads are very smooth due to the raised ground clearance as now the driver will about to get a clear view of the road. The steering grip is high and breaking individual wheels in a precise manner delivers more positive turn-in. The 360 camera assist system is quite handy while parking the car as it gives a 360 degrees view of the backside. But the disadvantage in this system is that its allotted only for the high-end model.

Review: Safety

Qashqai (old) was awarded with five star rating for the safety measures by test body Euro NCAP. While the new one is also offering the best possible safety measures which includes the individual tire breaking system, 6 Air bags ( 4 for front and two for rear ), and stability control system. The high and middle level Qashqai also offers smart vision pack which includes systems that warn if you’re going out of your lane or in danger of having a collision with obstacles. An image showing the safety test under Euro NCAP.

Running Cost & Rivals:

As far as the price tag goes many prices are specualted in the market, but the actual pricing is not confirmed yet by the company. Even the so called low end model also has the basic features such as iPod and Bluetooth connectivity, Cruise control system, AC-vents which many other companies that don’t offer s for a low end model think. However the mid and high end are equipped with more add-on features. I think Nissan should hold its value better than the rival models from companies such as Mazda, Ford, Hyundai, and Vauxhall.

Bottom-line:

For me the Nissan Qashqai is a power packed car as it has all the features what that are needed. But we have to wait for the official release of the price tag to see how deep a pocket one needs. If the price is set to an affordable range then I am sure that this will be one of the best model to watch out for, as it has all the qualifications which can help to seize the market from its rivals.

Mitsubishi Mirage – an expert review

Hello everyone, today lets discuss about a car which is manufactured by a company that has 3 diamonds in its logo. Not only that ,the cars from them are also worth as of a diamond! [ oh yeah Am a fan 🙂 ]   One of my favorite actor, Jackie Chan has a sponsoring agreement with them. Guess what? I am talking about Mitsubishi.

And today, I am going to give preview about its soon to be launched in India car – Mitsubishi Mirage!

Mirage is a mid–ranged compact car which was released recently by the Japanese automobile manufacturer Mitsubishi. We already know that Mitsubishi cars are well known for its sporty design, performance and also for its unmatched quality. Mitsubishi has unveiled its new Mirage to the market recently. Way back in 1989 Mitsubishi has won 10 best wins in global automobile market industry with its Mirage Turbo. Mitsubishi wants to repeat this through its new Mirage. Will new Mirage help Mitsubishi to regain that title..? lets wait and see, read on…

Technical-Specifications:

Before getting into reviewing the aspects of the new mirage lets go through the technical specifications of this car so that we can get a basic view about the aspects of this car.

Mitsubishi Mirage review

Design:

I have already stated that Mitsubishi cars are known for its design and build quality but when it comes to the new Mirage we should consider that Mitsubishi should give some more attention in order to give this car a new and trendy design. When it comes to the looks, Mirage looks quite similar to Chevrolet Spark with big eyes like head lights, charming and big oversize mirrors.

With the comparison with the Chevy spark, Mirage is stands nearly148.8 inches long, 65.6 inches wide and 59.1 inches tall, the Mitsubishi Mirage is slightly larger than the Chevy Spark, yet it offers a bit less passenger volume than the Chevy. The only considerable advantage anyone should expect is that with this design, it is easy to park with good visibility all around.

Performance:

The power to the car comes from a 1.2-liter inline three-cylinder engine delivering 74 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 74 pound-feet of torque at 4,000 rpm. Considering the balance between weight of this car & the power generated by this car through automatic variable transmission, the balance is quite appropriate and handy. Its manufacturer Mitsubishi has estimated that the car can reach 62 miles per hour in 12.8 seconds with the CVT, or a most likely 11.7 seconds with the five-speed manual gear shift which is actually slow, but I think its good enough to drive a car with this speed on city roads, when it comes to highways you might expect a little more power on the tap.

Interior:

A touch of piano black on the center console and bonnet looks good and neatly furnished. The front seats are spacious enough to fit for everyone. One drawback I observed with the interior is the absence of a telescoping steering wheel which is quite disappointing. The entering and out from the car can be done quite easily due to the presence of big doors. Coming to the rear seats, they dont seem to be spacious enough when we compare them with the front seats.

Exterior:

Exterior styling is mostly filled with 15-inch steel rims with hub caps. A pair of bulbous and large headlamps dominate the front part of the car and the small window fitted on the back decorates the rear end. It also equipped with two rare view mirrors for good visibility all around. The exterior is quite simple and little old styled.

Safety:

The Mitsubishi Mirage will be more suitable for driving on city roads, with a five star ANCAP safety score, mirage offers great security measures. This is one of the best aspects of this car. Six airbags are packed into the cabin to protect all people who are present inside. The suspension is also good enough to tackle all the challenges on city roads. Not sure whether this will be a optional one when they launch in India.

Pro’s : Fuel efficiency, Low price tag, Safety features, Interiors

Not so good stuff : After sales service, Highly competitive segment

Bottom Line: There is a tough competition for a car to compete in a compact car segment as this segment is liked by more people due to the reasons of affordability and decent maintenance cost. Mitsubishi Mirage comes into the compact as well as sub compact segment, so competition is huge.  The most desirable features must be given to its price tag for the Mirage to make value-for-money. These feature can help Mirage to withstand in the tough competition arena. Mitsubishi has ambitions to launch a series of models in India by 2016. Lets wait and watch!!!
