2015 Toyota Camry – an expert review

The Japanese sensation, Toyota has its scrupulous dose of sensational automobiles ranging for generations, out of the globally launched automobiles; there is one particular vehicle from Toyota that still creates awe.

The Toyota “Kan Muri” (pronounced Camry) which means little crown or Beyond Compare, has been adding successful miles to Toyota since 1982. The naming tradition behind the Camry was primarily because of the models that rolled out Toyota’s production workshop during 1950’s. The Toyota Crown, Corona and Corolla have similar meanings (crown, small crown) they were built to bestow a crown upon the customer (Customer felt like a crowned king, literally!!)

Recent news about the upcoming 2015 Toyota Camry sounds fun and the features make it just too exciting to ignore.  The initial Camry bodies were narrow and compact in size, however the new models have grown bigger and wider. During the early 1980’s, the Camry was an un-embellished 4 door sedan that carried the Celica Camry name plate.  Post 1982, the Camry was an independent model backed with a V10. A few years later, Toyota rolled out the Camry V20 series that made its debut in 1986, and four years later came the V30 sedan & hardtop, a model that was exclusively built for Japan.

Owing to an increasing demand for a commodious Camry, the wide-bodied XV 10 Sedan/Station wagon was introduced in 1991. The Camry had built quite a reputation by then, and Toyota kept the production and design meter rolling. The year was 1994 when the V30 was replaced by V40 and the XV10 was replaced in the year 1996, but the name was changed to Camry Gracia (gracias Toyota for this beauty) in Japan.

Post 1998, Vista had ended the Camry calibration and rolled out independent models with the V50 nameplate, however this too had a shortcoming, it was withdrawn in the year 2003. With an increasing popularity for wide-bodied cars, the XV 30 was launched in 2001; this car was quite spacious inside out. Toyota did not end the production just yet. The XV40 was launched in 2006, which was taken over by the XV50 models since 2011. The Camry looks camri-er than ever. The current models look trendy and fun loving.

The V10 – V50 ( a long story short) [1979-present]

It started in the year 1982, post the Toyota Celica (Celica Camry) roll out, the Toyota Vista had been assembled at the Tsunami plant in Japan and was ready to be introduced to various roads.  The 4-door sedans and 5 door lift back’s were introduced with transverse front engines and front wheel drive. The versions that had rolled out during that period had gasoline and diesel engines such as (1.8 L gasoline, 2.0 L gasoline, 1.8 L diesel turbo and 2.0 L diesel turbo variants) the vehicles were available in 4 and 5 speed transmissions

The next generation Camry sedans were produced soon after; they were named (S-series) SV10, SV11 and SV 12 along with (C-series) the CV 10 and CV 11. The V10 series bearing vehicles were 4 door notch back sedans. At the same time, Toyota had started exporting the Camry to Australia, Europe an North America.

During 1983-1986 Toyota Camry started tasting the sourness of competition, the Honda Accord was accredited the leading competitor of the Camry. Honda was really making the competition intense for Toyota. Owing to competition pressure and the need for innovation, the Camry cars had a 2.0 liter four cylinder engine that produced 92 horse power and was more powerful than the 86 hp (1.86 litre) accord, the wheelbase was longer than that of the Accord and there was more space for passengers and less room for competition.

It was time for the Second generation Camry, 1987 welcomed the new Camry that had many improved features and looks, the engine remained the same (2 litre; 4 cylinder) but the horse power increased to 115hp, it was pretty modern (then) and it was more aggressive than Honda Accord, Having said that, the Camry was preferred by the smooth and quiet transportation lovers whereas the Accord was pro interaction and feedback. During 1988, the Camry was launched with a V6 engine with an all wheel drive option, it had a 2.5 liter V6 DOHC (double overhead cams) that had 4 valves per cylinder and was as powerful as 153 ponies. This was the same time when these Japanese charms started making their appearance on American roads, Honda wasn’t prepared for the Japanese dominion on American roads but US customers were ready to welcome the Japanese technology in their garage.

In 1989,Toyota had the “All-Trac” technology with an automatic gearbox fitted into the Camry. The years that followed were glorious for Toyota. The brand was one among the finest brands to offer great cars with an excellent build quality and the cars topped the sales charts.

Many Camries were produced at the Kentucky Plant (Reminds me of KFC!!) to produce quality family cars. Camry was the fifth best selling car in America. During 1991, the Camry LE V6 Sedan and Wagon and the All Trac LE sedans were the popular cars being sold. During the same year, Toyota added knock sensors into the V6 cars that ensured smooth operations on roads.

America started becoming fond of large cars and so, in 1992 Toyota felt magnanimous and decided to increase the dimensions of the Camry, a notch. The larger Camry was a pleasant addition to the Toyota family. Not only was the space increased, Toyota also tried to broaden the smiles on the customers faces by adding smooth and round aerodynamics to the car, the body underwent various visual changes and improvements. The engine was smoother; the car was less noisier and started competing with luxury car rivals. Safety was given priority and Airbags were introduced, so were the three-point belts and ABS was introduced to Camry. Toyota did not stop there; the engines were bigger (2.2 liters) and flaunted 130 Horsepower. The V6 was upgraded to 3 liter and boosted 185 Hp. The new Camry was not only muscular, it learnt the new language of speed; it could do 0-60 in under 8 seconds. It was just about the right time to introduce sports Camry Sedans for the enthusiasts. This was a class apart from the regular Camry sedans, the sports car was bred differently, it had racing dynamics, sporty seats, rear spoiler and black tinted windows, there was a door handle and mirror trim.During 1996, the fifth generation Camry was introduced, there weren’t any prominent changes since the ’95 Camry, there were new seats, the interiors felt different and there were 2 new versions LE and LE Wagon introduced.

New and improved Camry was introduced in 1997, with a new body style and more curves, Toyota decided to drop the two door sedans and stick on to the four door sedans. There were three trim levels available namely; CE (base version) LE and the fully loaded XLE, the sporty Camry had to leave the production track of Toyota.

Toyota added more powerful engines to the Camry, the 2.2 liter inline four engine had 133 HP, whereas the V6 Toyota Camry had anti lock brakes added to them, ABS was also standard on all the 1997 Camries (except four cylinder models)

American consumers had a liking towards this new Camry, and evidently the Camry was the best selling car in the US during 1997.

There were safety-enhanced features incorporated in the 1998 Camrys, there were anti-theft systems improved via engine immobilizers in the cars and this just increased the reputation for Camrys. During 1999, Toyota had launched a Camry coupe named Camry Solara, this car had a look of its own and was creased in a very unique manner. The Solara models were available with either 4 cylinders or V6 variants and automatic and manual transmissions.

The same design lasted for around five years and the Toyota Camry that was launched in 2002 had a very unique body that looked far better than previous models. Elegance was the prime focus and Toyota worked completely towards giving the new Camry a whole new make over. Owing to minor changes in the previous years, in the year 2007, Toyota Camry had received major changes. The new design was radical and it did seem like the perfect Sedan apart from its luxury oriented features.

Toyota had released 4 trim models of the new Toyota Camry, the CE (base model), LE, SE and XLE.

Since 2011, the Camry XV50 is being sold in the US. The car has received various visual changes. But it still remains one of the most desired Family Sedans.

After along ride that lasted for generations, Toyota has geared up to say “Konnichiwa” to the all-new Camry 2015. Toyota has infused all sorts of changes in all Camrys ever produced. But, one such thing that it lacked was the “Fun Factor”

Both the models are paired with a six-speed auto transmission. Toyota has also introduced a Hybrid model with 2.5 liter Atkinson-Cycle four-cylinder engine with electric motor and nickel-metal hydride battery pack, which has an output of 200 hp. Directly competing with the 2015 Camry is the Honda Accord, both the cars share a lot of resemblance but, the 2014 Accord is a bit pricier than the 2014 Camry. Considering a “supposed” fun factor in the all-new Toyota Camry, the price is also going to loot the customer funny 🙂

PRICE:

The price of the 2015 Toyota Camry is a mystery. However, judging by the price of the 2014 base model Camry L (US $ 23,235) and the top end V6 XLE model (US $ 31,515) whereas the 2014 Hybrid Model costs between US $ 27,140 to US $ 28,755. The 2015 Camry might cost tad more than the 2014 models.

BOTTOMLINE:

ITS SCOOTY ZEST BABY !

Another Reason for Girls [I’m assuming even Guys 🙂 ] to rejoice. TVS has announced the launch of its newest member in the Scooty family, The All new ZEST.

Zestful by looks and playful by nature, the Scooty Zest is set to get winks on Indian roads in 2014. The peppy ranged Scooty is going to be packed with new features and not to forget, new and vibrant colors – making a great addition to your selfie 😉 

ENGINE:

The Scooty Zest is gonna to carry a 109.7cc Single cylinder Engine. The power can max out to 8 Bhp @ 7500 RPM, producing 8 NM torque @ 5500 RPM (cute enough). The auto transmission mated to the Scooty Zest’s engine, and a 4 stroke single cylinder (air cooled) and a carbureted engine would provide 51mm bore and a 43mm stroke. The Scooty Zest would also be quite fuel efficient and would provide competition in terms of pick up and riding comfort.

TVS claims that the ZEST would provide a mileage of 62 Kmpl. (much needed these days)

SUSPENSION:

Hydraulic telescopic forks front suspension and a mono coil spring rear suspension would make the bumpy roads a bit more bearable, thereby ensuring a hassle free smooth ride.  The braking is of utmost concern and hence drum brakes have been installed in both front and rear of the Scooty Zest (although a front disk brake could have been impressive)

Owing to unsteady road conditions, TVS Scooty Zest would have 10 inch pressed steel wheels and the tire size would be 3.0X10 inches.

VISUALS:

An all new white finished instrument panel would feature a classy analogue speedometer, a trip meter and a fuel gauge. This new scooterette with its makeup, looks better than the previous Scooty versions. TVS has redesigned the front apron of the Zest and the lamp design has also been changed. The headlight and the tail light looks chick friendly.

The albeit the chick friendly image is something the Scooty is known to carry. The technology and engineering has been a priority with the Scooty Zest. The appearance is exactly what a girly ride should look like. The stylish headlamp would have a 12 v, 35/35 W fixture to brighten up the road at night. The dash board has also been arranged specifically keeping uber chic features in mind and instruments such as the speedometer, odometer and fuel gauge have been given a contrasting look with the scooterette.

Zest would have both electric start and manual (kick) starter. The handle bar also provides easy and simple handling without worrying about the slippery accelerator or the heavy handles. Scooty Zest would also have sufficient space in the front to hold small luggage. There would also be a solitary hook attached (just like in any typical scooter) to safely handle bags and such.

The Scooty Zest is in tune with the current trend and the side profile definitely speaks so. The usage of high quality plastic definitely adds glamour to the side profile. You can easily store a bit more luggage (make up kit etc 🙂 ) under the seat. The seating is exceptionally larger and more comfortable than the previous Scooty models. The rider wouldn’t have to worry about the leg space, as TVS has graciously increased the foot rest and the pillion foot rest too. The pillion foot rest has been raised a bit towards an uprising position for extra comfort.

The seats look a bit similar to the Wego and the exhaust unit shares similarity to that sound in the Jupiter Scooter. The lamps have been given a slender look rather than sticking on to the bulky look. The tail lamps would have LED fixtures instead of the normal bulbs.

COMPETITION:

With competition lurking in every corner, the TVS SCOOTY ZEST would compete hip to hip with Honda Activa, Honda Dio, Yamaha Ray, Mahindra Rodeo etc. TVS would really have to work its way up. Thankfully, TVS has a good reputation among the ladies and the Zest might succeed.

BOTTOM LINE:

The all new scooty Zest is allegedly more peppy in terms of design and features. However, the peppy and cute factor wont just do. With bigger and more aggressive competition increasing, TVS would have to strategically plan the advertising and branding of ZEST. The good part is that TVS is going to bring out the ZEST in various color shades.

The Zest had mixed reactions at the Auto expo, while some prefer the performance attributes and the easy to handle features of the Zest, others aren’t quite convinced with the looks. Its up to TVS to market this potential competitor differently to regain the girly pride that Scooty has always stood for.

Both the motor scooter’s have been targeted at the mature audience and been modified to suit their needs and styles .The all new Activa 125 with its new chrome fittings on the front fascia , new tail lights and the tinted windscreen sets it apart from all other new arrivals in the motor scooter market. The Suzuki Access on the other hand did not  undergo any kind of major changes in its appearance. The Access 125 had rather an outdated and dull look with U-shaped tail lights and  the front end . When it comes to balance of looks and ergonomics these scooters are head to head which most buyers demand for . Both the scooters had raised handle bars  to give the rider a comfortable driving posture  and plenty of room. The footroom in Access 125 is not well spaced out as compared to the Activa 125. The over all looks and quality of the scooters help to earn a few points for them .

Engine and Performance.

Both these magnificent motor scooters  run on a similar petrol mill of 124cc .The Suzuki Access manages to churn out a 8.7Ps of power and 9.8Nm of torque whereas The Activa produces the same power at 10.1Nm but at higher torque ratings. Both the motor scooter’s might have similar type of technical specification on paper , but entirely weigh different in-terms of how they feel .When you gently press on to the Access 125 throttle you will get a smooth response and excellent linear power delivery.The Activa 125 is definitely more lively than its rival  the Suzuki Access 125 . It does not feel any kind stress or make loud noise even if it is kept pinned at 80Kmph. The Aciva’s  pick up and response  is obviously more superior than its rival . The Activa 125 power-mill is not flawless either , its has a little bumpy start when the scooter is throttled from stationary , whereas the ride is perfectly smooth. Both the vehicles are neck to neck when considering the dynamics of the scooter. Undoubtedly Activa emerges as winner in terms of dynamics and performance with its unmatched lively driving experience .

 

Reliability

The Activa 125 is forged with the telescopic forks up front and spring loaded type of suspension at the rear end .The scooter’s suspension  is some what rigid though.It manages to zoom through all the undulations of the road, absorbing all the bumps. The most favorite feature of the Activa for all the fans is its wide and raised handle bar making it so easy to zoom through the city traffic and thanks to the 130mm brakes up front for crisp braking power .The perfect combination of  the telescopic forks up front and the swing arm type coil springs at the rear end result in a plush and smooth ride quality on the Suzuki Access 125 ( though Activa has similar type of suspension upfront, it is somewhat stiff and unyielding )  . Honda Activa, with its raised handle bars makes it easier to handle and achieve better riding experience .Unlike the Activa , the Access doesnt provoke the disc brakes satisfactorily, but is also not slouch when it comes to braking. Response from the disc brakes in Activa is much better when compared to the response in Access 125 .

Mileage

There is always the typical Indian type of thinking no matter what are the buyers demands and styles , mileage is given more preference than the performance of the scooter itself .Thanks to the HET technology, Honda scooter’s have always proven to be the most efficient of their kind and the tradition is continued to Activa 125 . Activa 125 gives about 51.6Kmpl which is more than what Access 125 offers , that is 47Kmpl.

HARLEY DAVIDSON RE-INTRODUCES ROAD GLIDE (2015)

The Joy of listening to a Harley roar by is almost as hearing the heavens. Harley Davidson Motors have introduced plenty of these roaring beasts globally. But, this Harley Davidson motorbike has made a grand comeback. Read and cherish 🙂

The new models that are to roll out in 2015 are going to possess Harley’s Blood and soul. A High Output Twin Cam 103 V-twin mated to the Speed Cruise Drive Transmission. (One can just imagine the sound it would produce)

The 2015 Harley Glide is going to feature a sharper body that has been specially designed and a front mount that resembles a shark’s nose. The reason behind it is simple; the triple slipstream vent built on the Road Glide would reduce head buffering and wouldn’t allow the fast blowing air to hinder with the rider.

The 1690 cc High Output Twin Cam 103 engine with a 9.7:1 ratio, comes with an Integrated Oil-Cooler. All of this comes wrapped up in a black Chrome Cover (just makes your heart Melt) The hydraulic clutch actuation system adds to the joy of biking, so does the electronically assisted cruise control and a low cost, low maintenance belt drive.  It has Push operated valves, over head valves, 3 Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection System (ESPFI) a pressurized lubrication system with dry sump oil cooler.

The Road Glide special performs better than ever, the engine produces 142 Nm torque at 3250 RPM, and also helps you tour easily without having to worry much about the fuel consumption. The fuel consumption is pretty decent that gives you 42 Miles per gallon (5.6 litres for 100kms)

Also newly introduced are the new and fresh looking eyes on the 2015 Glide. The Harley bike would arrive with Dual Daymaker Reflector LED headlamps. Better vision and easy visibility.

TOURING MADE EASIER:

If you own this bike, you would certainly want to go touring. Harley has introduced various Touring amenities for the wanderlust in you. A few amenities include:

One Touch Hard Saddle Bags, Cruise Control, Adjustable Air- Rear Suspension, new and effective ergonomic hand controls and a new design with a tactile feel. The Road Glide 2015  also comes with a Boom Box (impressive right) 6.5 GT infotainment System, a GPS navigation system, Reflex Linked Brakes with ABS and also a hand adjustable low profile rear suspension. (now that is what I call a touring bike)

Mitsubishi Lancer Evo-lution and the revolution

Let’s talk about a car which was well-known throughout the world with its performance in its class. Can you guess it? Ok, here’s the clue, the car which was featured in “Two fast, two furious” and Jackie Chan’s “Who Am I”. Yes the car which had a glorious history in the past and probably the best car that Mitsubishi felt proud of building – It’s the Mitsubishi Lancer. Lancer is a compact car produced by the Japanese manufacturer Mitsubishi Motors since 1973.

Until 1992, Lancer was developed with a linked name under it and Mitsubishi used this car only for races such WRC and Dakar rally only, but at the beginning of 1992 Mitsubishi has introduced Lancer independently. So it has around 4 decades of history embedded in it. This is the car which made Mitsubishi flag waving around all the 7 continents in the world with different names in different continents. From 1973 to 2008, over six million units had been sold throughout the world. So let’s look into the history of this car and find out the amazing stuff which made this car a master piece.

First generation (1992-1994):

This was the first generation car from lancer. It is powered by a 2.0 DOHC engine. This sports mechanical plate type LSD’s whereas the successive Lancer models have rear mechanical plate type LSD’s. Performance wise this is a great model as it has a top speed of 228 KMPH, but safety features like ABS, power windows and seats are absent.

Introduced with enhancements such as wheelbase adjustments, front sway bar gets lighter and handling improvements. It also has the same GSR as the RS model.

It was named after the legendary sports car rally driver Tommi Mäkinen and it won WRC rally championship for that year.

Seventh Generation (2001-2003):

In this generation Mitsubishi Lancer cars major changes were applied on the car Chassis and Drive Trans. Automatic Drive Tran and Chassis Tweaks were introduced in to the car. A new model GT-A (gentlemen express edition) was added in the Line-up excluding GSR, RS, and RS-2. This model was introduced and discontinued in the same year 2002 and did not appear in any generations after the 7th generation. But the same GT-A gear box was used in the 9th generation model. The major enhancements include spoiler enhancements, light improvements, deluxe interior and exterior specs are introduced. After 4th generation this model is the total improved one.

In this generation 6 speed manual gear box was introduced along with the 5 speed manual, super active yaw control was also introduced. In this generation another two variants were introduced along with GSR and RS, those models are MR RS and MR GSR. The GSR and RS were having the 5-speed gear box and while the new MR GSR and MR RS were having 6-speed gear box. Enkei wheels, Brembo Brakes and Bilstein shocks were introduced to enhance the performance aspects of the car. It is one of the most successful models in the whole Mitsubishi Lancer series and is taught to be one of the first lancer car introduced in US and gained huge popularity.

Ninth Generation (2005-2007):

This generation was first exhibited in Geneva Motor Showto market it in both Japan and Europe. In this along with those 4 variants 2 other variants were introduced GT and MR Tuned by RALLIART.  The MR Tuned by RALLIART was based on Tommi Mäkinen Edition which was released during 1999. The GT version is a blend of both RS and some aspects of GSR model with a revised 5 gear box. This generation was also introduced in U.K with the names FQ-300, 320, 340, FQ-360 and MR FQ-360. Along with UK the car was introduced in Philippines too. So with this generation Mitsubishi Lancer gained Europe and as well as some parts of Asian markets too.

This is the present generation of Mitsubishi Lancer cars and this generation begins in 2007 and continuing until now with the new Lancer Evolution. As previous generations faced tremendous success, this generation Lancer cars concentrates on reaching worldwide production. Hence it released the tenth generation model all over the world starting with Asiatic countries such as Japan, China, India, Philippines, Malaysia and Europe and as well as United States, Germany, Australia and New Zealand. Review: Styling

Exterior:

The exterior of this car looks amazing and the body of the car looks very aggressive, and thanks to its muscular body line. Mitsubishi states that “This body is a mix match of all lancers which were released from the beginning”, so this car is carrying the legacy of lancer design. The best thing when it comes to the exterior of this car is the bumper. If we observe the lancer history, bumpers always get major changes. They are getting stronger and act as a signature element of the Mitsubishi Lancer. The 2014 Mitsubishi Lancer also have same two variants as always : The MR and GSR. These are some differences in between these two models.

Interior:

This is one of the very few cars people buy almost exclusively for the performance that the car produces rather than the luxury. But this model has the luxury item too. In terms of interiors, the car looks very neat and clean. In its range it offers some great interior features such as Sportive Recaro Seating, Three spoke steering wheel with audio, cruise and central controlling systems embedded on it. Review: Engine and performance

This car (both GSR and RS) is powered by 2.0-liter Turbocharged 16-valve I-4 with DOHC and MIVEC which generates peak torque range up to 300 @ 4000 RPM and the horsepower generates up to 291. The engines are same in both GSR and RS model, the major difference between them is GSR has 6-speed gear box while RS has 5-speed gear box. The top speeds of both are same and ranges at 146mph and while GSR model can reach 0-60 at 4.5secs, for RS it was 4.9secs. The fuel economy for GSR model is 17 in city and 23 in highway, while for RS model 17 in city and 22 in highway.

Maruti Ciaz is truly a marvel !

Maruti Suzuki is known for its reliability ranging across all its automobiles. Although, the recent launch of “Kizashi” had been a bit disappointing  ( because of the huge variation between the Concept Kizashi and the actual one that rolled out on Indian roads ) However, the latest news indicates that Maruti might discontinue its currently successful model SX4 towards the end of 2014 and roll out the new and revised replacement named Maruti Ciaz.

Ciaz made its first appearance at the 2014 Auto Expo and the Launch is expected in the last quarter of 2014.

The Ciaz concept might have the looks and curves to drool for and it might look aggressively slender and creased with a lot of chrome, the real impact would be realized when the actual models roll out (Sigh!! how i wish there were limited edition concepts rolled out in the market) Rumored to have the bits and bobs of the Ertiga... Ciaz seems to have an adaptation from plenty of its cousins such as the SX4, Swift and Ertiga. Maruti has such similar elements and design aesthetics mated into its anticipated Ciaz making it worth the festive wait. INTERIORS: A beige colored interior might bring the interiors of the Ertiga to mind, however considering a makeover, Maruti is definitely going to focus on new and improved interiors. The supposedly premium interiors would sport an ergonomic design enough to accommodate 3 people comfortably.

You'd be musically inclined too, the Ciaz would keep music a priority with a music system and features such as Bluetooth and multimedia options. The top end variants would sport A/C climate controls. The Steering would consist of an audio control panel, the car would also have a cooled glove box, and door pockets. You might also spoil yourself with Luxurious Leather seats (optional) BRAKES AND HANDLING: Maruti might grace Ciaz with the dynamic duo combination of its Conventional Disc and a Drum Brake. The front wheels might have ventilated disc brakes while the rear wheels would have drum brakes. Loaded with a front Mc Pherson Strut system and a Rear Torson Beam rear axle fitted with coil springs, the sedan has a lot more offerings such as air bags, engine immobilizer, side impact beams and a central locking system. COMPETITION: As the anticipation goes, Maruti Ciaz might be available in petrol variants such as LXi, VXi and ZXi whereas the diesel variants would be available in LDi, VDi and ZDi variants. The Owner’s Guide To YAMAHA YZF R15

Lets start with a bit of recent History.

Back in the year 2011, when young Indians (by age and at heart) had just started getting tired of the old YZF R15, Yamaha released yet another bombshell, the subsequent successor to the older R15, the YZF R15 Version 2.0. And boy did it live up-to its mark, rather it actually was way better than anyone had ever expected it to be. The way it looked was a class apart. The ergonomics were different, or simply said, better. This motorcycle pretty much managed to outshine any of the competitions – any it may have had in the Indian market back then. It looked meaner, faster and way advanced than its predecessor in every way. Even though the front looked pretty much the same, Yamaha had completely refurbished the side cowls and pretty much everything else.

The new split seats gave it a way sportier look along with the LED tail lamps, wider tires, specially the rear one which had been replaced with 130/70 R17 compared to the thinner 100/80 that the earlier ones were provided with. The new lighter aluminum swing-arm was a great addition to the motorcycle along with the elevated exhaust outlet. The more aggressive seating position was meant to give you the feel of an all round sports motorcycle. It was every adrenaline junkie’s wildest dream back then.

YZF R15 Invincible Black

So Anyway….

Today I’ll be telling you all about owning the YZF R15 Version 2 and I’ll let you into a couple of insider secrets too. On one fine evening in the month of July in 2013, after a lot of research and survey I had finally set my mind on the fact that I wanted to upgrade to the new YZF R15 (Invincible Black). Me being a passionate rider, who has always cared about the adrenaline rush rather than the comfort, have never quite regretted that decision since then. I’ve rode it for 7761 kilometers since then and I could say that I have enjoyed each and every kilometer of it. Simply put, it’s a mad man’s apprentice.

It’s unbelievably quick, it has the looks to kill for, it’s pretty fuel efficient and it can go almost anywhere. It has the same engine and torque specifications as the earlier version which I also used to own, the same 149.8 cc. engine that produces 16.8 Bhp of raw power that is more than enough to blow a sane person’s mind away. It also has the same output figures as the older one and can go upto almost 147 kmph if it’s in the right hands.

Starting off at the looks, well, it has the looks which can even make your first crush go gaga over it and make your best friend jealous of you. I never liked the black side cowl so I colored them a bright orange which people seemed to like instantly.

Technical Review:

The dual headlights don’t seem to work as good as they look though. Personally speaking, they could have been brighter and you might face problems if you’re riding at night specially in highways where there is almost no light whatsoever. Same goes for the seat – If you’re looking for comfort with a pillion in the back, you’ll have to shake that dream off. The motorcycle can be a real pain if you’ve got a pillion behind you specially if he/she is a bit on the heavier side. The acceleration seems to drastically lower if you’ve got someone heavy on the backseat. Plus the hard backseat can be a pain in the arse (literally).

But riding alone is a breeze, I’d actually say that this motorcycle is supposed to be ridden alone if you want to savor what lies within all that expensive bodywork. This bike will give you the feeling of going fast, where you’re riding at 40kmph or 140kmph if you know how to ride it properly. Though if you want to wade through traffic, it’s wide body can be a problem and the motorcycle tends to heat up if you’ve been using the wet multiplate clutch constantly for prolonged periods of time. The open chain seems to attract a lot of dirt and gravels always. I try to clean it from time to time since it effects performance noticeably if there’s too much dirt or mud on it which tends to be such a hectic process since there is no double stand. I’ve always used Motul Chain Lubricant but I don’t think other brands would be bad either.
Engine Maintenance:

If we’re talking about engine oils I’d say the factory assigned Yamaha Lube should be best but, me, I use Valvoline 4 Stroke Motorcycle Oil, but that’s just me. It just gives the motorcycle a crisp feel which can be pretty addictive. But I used Motul 3000 4T plus earlier on the version one and it worked like a charm too. The air filter hasn’t needed to be changed yet and has been running perfectly normal for the past year. The engine oil filter which seems really costly at around 145 bucks a pop also needs replacement with every subsequent oil change which I’ve done every 800 kilometers or so. The spark plugs are also running nice and smooth though I feel that after 10,000 kilometers a change might just be necessary. Keeping atleast half a tank of gas is also recommended. These things kept in mind, I’d say, for an average rider, it’ll provide a mileage of about 28 kmpl in city roads and about 40 kmpl plus on the open highways. That’s about all you need to know about maintaining a YZF R15 Version 2 I believe.

Strictly as an Enthusiastic Owner:

I know it might not be the most comfortable ride ever, or the most pocket friendly ride of all times but you have to keep this in mind that the reason behind buying this bike was neither one of those, it was about the fun, thrill, looks and border-lining that you’ve always dreamt of, and this bike seems to be performing more than good at those. The wider tires give you so much more confidence while going into a corner at high speeds. I’ve done a lot of highway riding on it and I don’t think there is a single complaint I might have. The latest front Telescopic suspension and rear Linked type Mono-cross suspension is such a comfort whilst riding within cities and on the highway. The 6-speed gearbox can make highway riding as smooth as it gets. There will probably be no moment during a ride when you might be asking it for anything more than it’s already doing.

The YZF R15 is the classic story of The Beauty and The Beast except the fact that here, both have combined into this screamer of a motorcycle.

Skoda Rapid Spaceback- An Overview

The Skoda Rapid which was launched in 2012 is bigger than the Fabia and smaller than the Octavia hatch. Keeping this in mind, Skoda recently launched its Skoda Rapid Spaceback for people looking forward to a more stylish and cheaper car. The Skoda Rapid Spaceback is a hatch version of the regular Skoda Rapid and with no doubt it looks way edgier than any hatch.

One thing that should be kept in mind is that the Skoda rapid spaceback is not an estate version of the regular skoda rapid and rather it is a traditional five door hatch. Spaceback offers a good suspension however; some exterior appearances like the long nose and short rear overhang can make the car look very peculiar. Comparing it with the regular Rapid, the Rapid spaceback is 180mm shorter in length but identical from the front grille to the rear doors. The rear obviously takes a shape of a conventional hatchback.

INTERIOR

Coming to the interiors, the wheelbase of both the Rapids are same and therefore the spacious interiors remain by and large, unchanged. The Dash is made of hard and black plastic but the design is robust and sophisticated and same as the regular skoda rapid. Spaceback comes in with attractive 17-inch alloy wheels (Elegance version) and extra glass in the rear hatch. It is also decked up with improvements such as a revised multi-function steering wheel, a neater stereo installation, and new trims and seat fabrics, electro-mechanical power steering instead of a hydraulic set-up. The only problem with the ride is its over firmness. The boot space of this car is 415 litre but still roomier than any of its rival hatchbacks.

Skoda Rapid Spaceback is surely a thumbs up when it comes to space and style. The rear legroom is very much spacious followed by excellent headroom and many more storage spaces. There is a giant panoramic glass sunroof too. Other features include air-conditioning, remote central locking, electric front windows, a height-adjustable driver’s seat and an alarm. Mid-spec SE trim adds body-colored door handles and mirrors, 15-inch alloy wheels, a glove box, a multi-function steering wheel, Bluetooth, rear parking sensors, cruise control, front fog lights, electric rear windows and a front center armrest. The Elegance variant which is the top most variant also get bigger alloys, climate control, a height-adjustable passenger seat and many more! Skoda has also done some practical designing like the ice scraper which is concealed on the fuel tank cap, a multimedia device bracket to hold a phone, a removable waste basket in the door paneling holder and a warning vest holder under the driver’s seat.

SAFETY

Skoda has played very clever when it comes to the safety of its passengers. It comes with a wide range of safety measures such as ESC (Electronic Stability Control) including ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) and six airbags. When the curtain airbags are activated, it creates a wall to protect passengers in both the front and rear from potential head injuries.

ENGINE

Skoda Rapid spaceback comes in four variants- S, SE, Elegance and GreenLine specs. It comes with a 55 KW 1.2 Litre MPI engine which reaches 0-100 KM at 13.8 seconds and has a maximum speed of 173 KMPH. Similarly, it also comes with 63 KW/73 KW 1.2 Litre TSI engine. It also comes in diesel 1.6 TDI engine with different power outputs ranging from 66 KW and 77 KW. 66 KW 1.6 TDI and 90 KW 1.4 TSI engines are mated with seven speed DSG automatic transmission. The 90 KW 1.4 litre TSI engine reaches 100 km in 9.4 seconds having a maximum speed of 203km/h. Skoda Spaceback is an environment friendly car emitting Carbon dioxide ranging from 114-134 g/km.

FEATURES

Start stop system- The start stop system automatically switches off the engine when the vehicle is stopped thereby saving fuel and preventing the vehicle from emitting pollutants.

How does it work? When the driver stops the vehicle and shifts the gear to neutral, releasing the clutch pedal, the engine switches off automatically. The engine starts when the driver shift’s gears.

Energy recovery- What it basically does is makes the kinetic energy into usable electricity. This saves the fuel which would be otherwise used up to charge the battery.

Land Rover is a brand of Jaguar Land Rover and is known for its rugged, premium and luxurious SUV’s. It was acquired by TATA Motors in 2008. Land Rover has showcased its discovery concept at 2014 Newyork Auto show and will come with a sport model early next year. Land Rover discover defines itself as a rugged SUV with luxurious space for seven along with premium exterior styling.  Discover is unique in the technologies which are applied to easily surpass the off-road challenges often faced during adventure rides. Now, we will go through the latest technologies installed in this concept SUV.

TERRAIN RESPONSE LASER SCANNING:

Being a SUV, it is important that this car should easily pass through all type of road conditions. It is important for the driver to interact with the vehicle during off-road conditions, be it sand or snow. Land Rover has already pioneered this in its previous SUV’s where a knob can be adjusted by the driver in order to change the suspension and power train settings depending on the road surfaces. In the discovery sport concept,  laser scanning technology has replaced the knob. The infrared lasers are installed in the fog lamps to view the terrain ahead and automate the terrain response settings. Also, in addition to that a high resolution screen is installed for getting a topographical look ahead and finding a best possible way out of it.

The next generation response system which will involve road surface texture detection. A water depth sensing system making use of lasers will help in identifying the depth of water bodies and thereby giving the green signal for the under body clearance available for crossing it. Other technologies include the wet grass traction control and high or low speed steering assist.

A more sophisticated cruise control feature for off-road drive is introduced. If the off-road terrain is not predictable, a semi- automatic cruise control will take over, where the vehicle will be operated at low speeds with appropriate torque vectoring. A guide mode is also installed which will allow the driver to select the type on in-built off-road conditions like muddy, sand, snow, rocks etc. Thus there will always be a  balance between the automatic off-road cruise control and the driver’s involvement in it.

TRANSPARENT HOOD:

A new technology named “Transparent Hood” is introduced in Land Rover Discovery. As the name suggests , you might think of it as a transparent body but is not. The transparency is due to the projection of the images captured by road texture detecting cameras. The images are projected on the heads up display on the windshield. Thus the driver sees the road and not the hood. It makes him feel as if the hood is transparent. The projection can also be made onto the exterior windows. These glasses are named as smart glasses, hence all the glass surfaces actually behave as a multi screen display.

GESTURE CONTROL:

Gesture controls have the tendency to impose risk while driving and are thus under the development stage.As of now they are commonly used for infotainment systems. The motion sensors capable of recognizing the finger and hand movements. Apart from infotainment, they will be made to sense gear shifting, opening and closing of doors and activating lights. These technologies are surely going to take human-vehicle interaction to a new level.

OTHERS:

Four of the interior seats have infotainment screens. The vehicle is equipped with laser headlamps and are 10% in size of LED’s. Thus there is huge potential in exploring the front end design of the vehicle. There is no compromise in terms of light output range which is upto 300m. In order to prevent the blinding of the drivers in the coming cars, smart automatic dimming is added to the laser headlamps. Cameras will detect the traffic and accordingly activate dimming of the light and proper visibility will be maintained for driving.

All the above mentioned technologies are pave way to reduce driver’s work in the vehicle. If the technologies are applied with proper validation and testing in all driving scenarios, this would definitely start a new era of driver-less cars. It will also help in reduction of driver fatigue occurring during long drives. Land Rover Discovery certainly has the potential to demonstrate such technologies on road and drive a new era of human oriented engineering in automobiles.
