Proud to be one among the league of the highest selling cars in India, with success sharing cousins like the Alto K10 and the Celerio AMT, Maruti Suzuki India has now introduced the all-new Auto Gear Shift (AGS) technology and coupled it with the Wagon R. Wagon R has been a desired hatchback vehicle for quite some time and Indians have grown a liking towards this vehicle.
To add more challenge to the buying game, the company has added the AGS technology with the Wagon R Stingray. Besides this, the company has also offered optional driver and co-driver airbags and anti-lock braking system (ABS) across all variants of the hatchbacks.

Exterior & Interior
You can very well expect the AMT gearbox along with the AMT badge on the car’s boot lid. The exteriors haven’t been touched and there aren’t any changes to it. The company has now offered the driver and co-driver airbags as well as anti-lock braking system (ABS) that happens to be an optional offering across all variants of the vehicles. The new AMT model has adapted the tall-boy design and has blue tint headlamps, chromed grille, body-colored bumpers and door handles, side body moldings and other design elements. Inside, the car gets the regular dual-tone beige and black interior them with dual-tone 3D effect upholstery, electronic power steering, keyless central door locks, air conditioner with heater and rotary AC controls, etc.
The vehicle comes with auto gearshift transmission with Intelligent Shift Control Actuator. This feature is available only on the VXi variants of the both the vehicles. Interestingly, Maruti Suzuki, currently, offers Auto Gear shift in Celerio and Alto K10.
Certainly enough, Maruti Suzuki has to get all the credits for making automatic gearbox more acceptable in India’s affordable compact car segment, by introducing Maruti Alto and Maruti Celerio with automatic manual transmission (AMT).
Engine & Transmission
The same 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder K-Series petrol engine that also does duty to the regular models powers the Wagon R AMT. However, the power train is now coupled with an auto gearshift (ASG) transmission. It also has a Magneti Marelli-sourced, coupled with an Intelligent Shift Control Actuator that automatically performs clutch and shift operations. This system also optimizes ECU calibration of the engine, and enhances its fuel efficiency. This engine churns out a maximum power of 67bhp with a peak torque of 90Nm. The Wagon R AMT just like the Celerio with its 998 cc motor will produce a mileage of around 23 kmpl.
The new Maruti Wagon R EZ Drive with AMT is said to be offered in LXi and VXi variants initially. The price for the new Wagon R AT (with automatic manual transmission) will be about Rs 50,000 more than the manual gearbox version, and is expected to cost between Rs 4.5 lakh and 5 lakh.
It was reported that Maruti is working to increase the production of AMT cars to 43%. Maruti seems to have taken a step forward in the same context. Not only this, now the report stating that 30 percent of the cars in India will feature AMT by the year 2020. Every manufacturer is working on producing AMT cars. Earlier this month, Toyota also mentioned that all its cars would be launched as automatic cars in India.
The AMT version of Wagon R Automatic is available only in the String ray edition to keep it at the premium end line up. The Wagon R Sting Ray comes in 3 different variants namely; VXi (O) Petrol, VXi (Petrol) and LXi (Petrol). It is powered by 998cc three-cylinder engine producing maximum power of 68 PS at 6,200 rpm and 90 Nm of peak torque at 3,500 RPM. It features a 5-speed transmission. The dimensions of the car are 3636 x 1475 x 1670 mm ( L x W x H). The wheelbase is 2400 mm with a ground clearance of 165 mm.
