The dawn of a new era
There is a prophecy that the maximum power produced by an engine depends the number of cylinders present in it and size of the cylindrical chamber. This prophecy had led to the introduction of new types of engines with various modifications in design and working process. One such engine platform are the V8 engines having 8 cylinders arranged in V-shape. Since its origin from 1902, the V8 engines are evolving to a better shape. The 2014 Geneva motor show had turned into a nightmare for this prophecy. The Swedish carmaker Koenigsegg has recently reached an incredible feat with the introduction of the One:1 program that was targeted for the sculpturing of six unique machines.
This One:1 program from Koenigsegg aims at proving the world that the V8 engines are capable of giving out a greater power than imagined when they are designed with better care. This feat by Koenigsegg had led the Bugatti in shame for the second time in a row. The Bugatti which rolled out the bully veyrons with W16 engines supported by the quad-turbochargers believed that they have achieved something very big in the automotive world.
The Veyron’s 8.0L engine had a peak power output of 1,000 bhp which made it to reach an unbelievable top speed of 407.12Km/h (252.97mph). The Koenigsegg’s Agera R blew up the Bugatti’s cover for the first time, the second big blow was given with the intro of the One:1 concept.
The Concept of One:1
The One:1 works based on a principle of hp to kg curb weight ratio, that is 1hp for 1Kg.The total Curb weight of the car is 1360Kg, so the max power of One:1 is 1360Ps according to the equation. This concept was thought to be an impossible phenomenon. U might be knowing that 1360Ps is equal to 1 megawatt of power. This makes one:1 the world’s first car to produce a total power that equals to an incredible one million watts. Koenigsegg has given high priority for their design and aerodynamics to achieve this big leap.
The oomph factor:
The Koenigsegg One:1 is a heavier modification of the typical Agera. So it carries a 5.0L V8 engine with specially developed 7-speed dual clutch transmission with paddle-shift and an electronic item that had been equipped in its predecessors. This V8 engine has 4 valves per cylinder and DOHC technology. The engine has 92mm bore and a stroke length of 95.25 mm with a compression ratio of 9.0:1. The fuel is delivered sequentially by multipoint fuel injection system. The total weight of the engine is 197Kg fabricated with carbon fiber intake manifold consisting of optimized intake system and ceramic coated exhaust manifold.
The variable geometry twin turbochargers equipped in the one:1 boosts the horsepower by a 201 units by supplying an additional pressure of 26.1 psi to the combustible mixture. Thus the car is capable of escalating from 0 to 400km/h at approximately 20 seconds. This is exciting isn’t it? not only this, the One:1 can be stopped even quicker than that from 400km/h at 10 sec approximately with a braking distance of 28m for 100-0km/h. The brake system is made up of ventilated ceramic discs of 397 mm diameter and 40 mm width at front with 6-piston calipers for a tight grip, as the rear brakes has ventilated ceramic discs of 380 mm diameter and 34 mm wide with 4-piston calipers. This master piece is definitely a license to thrill your senses.
Design features, Aerodynamics and Dimensions:
The design of the one:1 as mentioned above has been made carefully with cutting edge technology, assuming all the possible conditions of the surroundings. The body of the car is made up of the super strong lightweight materials such as advanced high modulus carbon fibers and Kevlar for the body. The chassis is made of the honeycomb core and integrated fuel tanks for optimized weight distribution and safety as that of the F1 cars.
It is an unimaginable fact that this super car has a total chassis weight of only 72Kg. The vehicle’s aerodynamics plays an important role in achieving the power packed performance. The drag coefficient ranges from 0.45 to 0.50 with adaptable rear wings. The trunk weight has been reduced to increase the frontal down force by 40% from the usual weight, i.e, the total downforce at 260km/h is 610kg and 830kg at 440km/h. Thus the weight is distributed as 44% of total weight at front and 56% at rear. The body mods present here are designed favorably to improve the smooth flow of air through them.
The dimension of this mega machine is 4500 mm x 2060 mm x 1150 mm with a ground clearance 59-100 mm and 74-90 mm at front and rear respectively. Guess what? there is a lift system that can be used to modify the ground clearance by 50 mm. Ok let us go to the fuel tank details, the fuel tank can hold 74 litres of fuel. In this case three types of fuels are available as an option, yes three types of fuels, I am not bluffing, the one:1 follows the footsteps of the iconic CCXR running with either E85 biofuel, Race fuel or normal gasoline fuel. There is a problem with Agera, that is, when the Octane number of the fuel decreases, the horsepower shrinks. But this has been rectified here.
Electronic equipment and Additional Features:
The electronic equipment acts like the brain controlling the heart and thus delivering the performance at top notch. The equipment cluster consists of typical systems such as lightweight glass system, power windows, sport ABS, Electronic Speed Controller, Power steering and brakes, automatic climate control, rear view camera, tyre monitoring system etc. The other equipment like G sensor, active ride height for adjusting ride height, the intelligent LifePro4 battery are not usually found in other ordinary high end cars.
The One:1 is equipped with the exclusively developed Michelin Cup 2 tires with the frontal and rear dimensions of 265/35-19” and 345/30-20” respectively with a speed rating of 440km/h. The additional attractions such as the monolithic racing bucket seats, active shock absorber settings, titanium exhaust outlet, active noise cancellation, variable turbo geometry aims at providing an enhanced riding experience.
The Koenigsegg one:1 is undoubtedly the most desirable piece of techno-craft and a remarkable milestone in the automobile world. The one:1 may cost around 25lakh US$ which is a very hefty price to be paid. But pleasure and pride of holding the Diamond encrusted key of this masterpiece surely has no price limit. The One:1 is now the superior member of the brotherhood of big elite machines like Pagani Hayura, Bugatti Veyron, Hennesy VenomGT andits own siblings the CCXR and Agera.
