There used to be a time when the hatchback was viewed as a cheap and practical option for most Indians. Whether it be fuel efficiency you’re finicky about or the ability to find a parking spot with ease, the humble hatchback came forward and unobtrusively stood up to the challenge. With pockets getting deeper and manufacturers setting up local manufacturing units, hatchbacks have taken on a more flamboyant air. They’re still city-friendly, capable of making it through traffic without much hassle, and able to fit the average family. But it achieves looking a lot better and performing unlike before as well.
The competition in the hatchback segment is fierce, understandably. The most recent rivalry is that between the new Fiat Punto Evo and the Volkswagen Polo. Each of these are worthy competitors and how things turn out in the market is interesting to watch. The Fiat Punto Evo is easily the smartest car in its class, but others have woken up to the reality that this doesn’t mean it is a car to be trifled with. Here’s how the the new Fiat Punto Evo performs when pitted against the seasoned Volkswagen Polo.
Both the cars have evolved a lot when it comes to their exterior designing. It seems like these manufacturers have worked a lot on ensuring that the appeal begins with a first look at the car. The Fiat Punto Evo may be diminutive but it is a very good-looking compact car. The high tensile steel body assures high end safety for the vehicle. The Volkswagen Polo is beautifully designed with a sophisticated and stylish front grille, artistic dual beam headlights covered with posh black layer, distinctive design of its company logo on the trunk, 15 inch alloy wheels and inventively styled tail lights. The Punto Evo comes off looking like the better car overall.

Both the cars share many similar features inside the cabin. The most noticeable change in the new Volkswagen Polo is the upgraded engine. It now comes with a 1.5 liter diesel mill, which delivers 90PS and a peak torque of 230Nm. The new Fiat Punto Evo puts out 93PS of power and 209 Nm of torque. These cars are pretty much on even keel on the power front. The Punto Evo has an edge given its higher ground clearance at 185mm, while it is only 165mm on the Polo. It also has bigger 16 inch wheels, hydraulic power steering, and a much better driving field. Despite this, when it comes to real-world handling, there is no beating the Polo. It may be underpowered on paper, but the smooth power delivery and easy to handle gearbox render it a joy to drive.

FUEL EFFICIENCY AND VALUE FOR MONEY
Talking in terms of the fuel efficiency the Fiat Punto Evo again stands slightly ahead of the Volkswagen Polo as it gives a mileage of 20.5kmpl, as opposed to the 20.1kmpl in Volkswagen Polo. When it comes to the value for money proposition, it isn’t so simple which car comes off the better. The fully loaded and spacious Fiat Punto Evo with the 90HP engine is priced at Rs. 7.20lakhs. The stylish and suave Volkswagen Polo is priced at Rs. 7.37 lakhs. The price difference is minimal and isn’t a sufficient parameter to tell which car offers the better overall package.

It’s going to be a tough call between the two as they both are distinctively designed, have unbeatable and world class features in terms of quality. But the Punto Evo not just offers a value for money, but it’s also much more spacious and offers features too. Simultaneously it’s also evident that the Polo has a considerable edge over the Punto Evo in terms of engine power and looks.
As with most other decisions, this one comes down to preference. The Punto Evo has the creature comforts but not so much the performance. It does seem to offer slightly better interiors. However, for those who want a car that is a looker and the ability to experience the famed goodness of German engineering, the Volkswagen Polo is the way to go.

Although the Skoda Yeti has been hailed by many as one of the best SUVs in International markets, the car’s lackluster design and high price tag discouraged buyers from choosing the Czech SUV. Undeterred by the lack of enthusiasm shown by the Indian audience, Skoda has launched a face-lifted Yeti for the year 2014. Let’s see how this new model stacks up against the crowd favorite.
The 2014 Skoda Yeti Face-lift is more of an evolution of the car’s previous generation than a total revamp. The car still maintains its boxy structure but drops the dual headlight design for a more refined classic Skoda look. The 2014 model also comes with Skoda’s new butterfly grille as well as the redesigned logo. However, while the new Yeti is a massive improvement from the previous generation, the SUV still features uninspiring bodywork.
Despite Mahindra’s choice of retaining the XUV5OO virtually unchanged since it’s launch, the SUV’s design still manages to grab eyeballs. The Yeti’s interiors follows similar design methodologies as most cars in Skoda’s range. Simple, elegant and uncluttered, the SUV’s cabin features the standard array of tech and safety equipment. The international model features a faux wood panel running across the all black dash adding a bit of luxury appeal. Skoda’s SUV comes with a 2 DIN music system with the usual iPod, Bluetooth, AUX connectivity. True to German standard, the Yeti’s interiors are well built and makes use of high grade plastics and leather-work. Steering mounted controls allows the driver to control the audio system as well as receive calls.
The neatly organized interiors maybe one of the German car maker’s strong suites, however, the car does seem to lack a bit of the Skoda panache we’ve come to know and love.
The XUV5OO is truly one of Mahindra’s greatest achievements in the design segment. The blend of curves and cuts endow the SUV with one of the most interesting cabins till date. Unlike the woodwork in the Yeti, Mahindra’s implementation of the same is far more impressive. The Yeti makes use of a 2.0 L TDI CR engine that churns out 138 HP @ 4200 RPM and a max torque of 320 Nm @ 1750 RPM. Power is either sent to the front wheels or all four wheels via a 5 speed manual gearbox.
Powering the Mahindra XUV5OO is a 2.o L mHAWK engine that features a variable geometry turbo. The Mahindra SUV produces 140 HP @ 3750 RPM and a max torque figure of 330 Nm @1600 RPM.
Although the power difference is minimal, the XUV5OO’s overall bulk might give the Yeti an edge with its greater power to weight ratio.
Round 3 Winner: Draw
Despite the obvious reasons why one would choose the Mahindra XUV5OO, the Skoda Yeti has a better track record as a versatile everyday car as well as a credible off roader. Sadly, the same cannot be said about Mahindra’s SUV. Honda’s most awaited and anticipated car of the year, the Honda Mobilio, is finally out. It serves as Honda’s first Multi Purpose Vehicle in the country. But it will have to compete with the current segment favourite- the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga. To gain a better understanding about these MPVs and allay your doubts, here is a head to head between the Ertiga and Mobilio.
Both the Honda Mobilio and Maruti Ertiga come with above average looks. But of the two the one that has the ability to elicit a second look is the Honda Mobilio. Some of the noticeable features of the Mobilio are the chrome lining on its grille, headlights, drawn out rear end and power antenna, which unifies higher level of mechanical security. The Ertiga MPV in its diesel form offers 1.3 litre Ddis and creates the max output of 90 bhp with 204 Nm of torque at 200 rpm. Both engines give manual type gearboxes. The Indonesian version of the Mobilio is propelled with a version of the 1.5-litre i-VTEC mill from the City, which belts out 116bhp and a torque of 14.6kgm. These numbers reveal that the Mobilio gains an edge over the Maruti Ertiga in terms of power.
Of the two MPVs in this race, it is the Mobilio that offers the more enjoyable drive. This is owed to the fact that the car handles amazingly well and feels more stable when pushed a bit. The Ertiga does well for its size but simply doesn’t offer the pleasing drive the Mobilio does.

The diesel engine produces minimum mileage of 15-17kmpl in traffic conditions and a superb fuel efficiency of 22-24kmpl in highway conditions. Honda Mobilio may be lacking in size when viewed externally, but with class-defining performance, eye-catching exteriors and three rows of seats, it certainly has the chops to take the fight to the best of its competition.

While the demand for them is revelatory of this fact, manufacturers’ preoccupation with keeping the hatchbacks in their portfolio fresh also shows how important they are in the market. In 2014, the competition has heated up with the launch of two updated models- Hyundai Elite i20 and Fiat Punto Evo. Let’s take a spin showing you all the features and specifications of these newly launched Hyundai and Fiat hatches.
The new Hyundai Elite i20 comes with bold and aggressive front, sleek swept back headlamps, sporty alloy wheels on the side and dynamic signs running along the sides, which gives the side profile of the car an interesting appearance. The outside door handles are finished in chrome while the electrically-adjustable rear-view mirrors come with integrated turn indicators. The Hyundai Elite i20 and Fiat Punto Evo share many attributes in terms of features on the interiors- with climate control, 2-DIN music system (BT+USB+AUX) and steering mounted audio and multimedia controls being common between the two. You also find rear air conditioning vents in top of the line variants in both the cars. But it seems like the Hyundai Elite i20 grabs the edge in the interiors as it holds some exclusive features like- chilled glove box, two 12V power outlets, telescope adjustment for the steering, 1GB internal memory, and rear view parking camera. These are some niceties that the Punto Evo does not boast. In terms of upholstery, the Fiat Punto Evo gets a complete black nourishment in its interiors whereas the Hyundai Elite i20 uses dual tone beige and black interiors. the new Punto Evo is spacious enough to accommodate five passengers comfortably. However, the Elite i20 takes the cake as being one of the most premium-looking cars in terms of how the cabin feels.

The Elite i20 continues to gain power from the 1.2 litre Kappa VTVT petrol engine. The diesel version of the car houses a 1.4 litre U2CRDi engine. The 1.2 litre Kappa mill delivers a peak power of 82bhp at 6000 rpm and an upper torque figure of 115 Nm at 4000rpm. The 1.4 litre diesel unit develops 89bhp at 4000rpm and 220Nm of torque at 2750rpm.The hatchback is available in two petrol and one diesel engine variants. The 1.2 litre petrol engine pumps out peak output of 67bhp, and the 1.4 litre diesel unit churns out 90bhp. Fiat’s 1.3 litre Multi-jet diesel engine comes with two power output options – 75bhp and 92bhp. The 92bhp version of the Punto Evo is the most powerful engine in its league.
Performance is where the Punto Evo tends to lose ground against the Hyundai Elite i20. It is more powerful on paper but the drive is quite sluggish and the car feels slow out of the blocks. The engine aboard the Elite i20 feels a lot more refined. The electronically-controlled throttle control ensures that the power-delivery is consistent with the amount of load that is being placed on the car.

Rumors are abound that Toyota will soon be unveiling a C segment sedan in 2015 to compete against the incredibly popular Hyundai Verna and the Honda City. Japanese car maker Toyota hasn’t seen the best of days.
Falling behind in sales in various segments, Toyota has succumbed to models from other manufacturers that constantly revamp their entire lineup to stay ahead of the game. One of the primary reasons for Toyota’s rapidly declining market share is the lack of models in some of the biggest segments of the Indian market.
A wide gap in its lineup between the Etios and the Corolla Altis has much potential and Toyota may finally be filling it with the Vios. Set to compete against segment best sellers such as the Honda City and Hyundai Verna in 2015, the Vios has a long and difficult road ahead. We take a look at what the Vios has to offer against some of the biggest names currently in the Indian car market.
The Toyota Vios is far more aggressive in terms of character when compared to its more expensive siblings, the Corolla Altis and the Camry. Although the Vios borrows numerous elements from the Altis, the sedan’s angular front bumper and distinct headlight detail endow the Toyota with a much stronger road presence. The Vios’ heavily sculpted sides provide the car with a bit of flair reminiscent of Toyotas of yesteryear. The overall design of the upcoming sedan may be just the thing for the car maker to drop it’s image as a boring and safe option.
The model currently on sale in the Philippines is also sold in an interesting colour palette such as florescent orange and classic blue. Toyota’s in house racing division TRD, also offers a sporty body kit as an ption.
While the exteriors of the Vios demand for attention, the interiors of the car play it safe. Toyota had made use of a beige and black cabin similar to most cars in its range. However, it is also available in a sportier all black cabin as well.
The three spoke steering wheel features silver accents along with a minimal amount of steering mounted controls. A welcome change in an era where steering mounted controls have become a little too obtrusive.
The infotainment system is rather dated for the international model but expect an updated system for the India bound variants. To match the upcoming Ciaz’s touch screen system, Toyota will need to pack the Vios with a fully loaded system capable of standing it’s own even against D segment vehicles.
The Japanese are renowned for their engineering prowess and the team over at Toyota are no exception. The car maker’s focus on drive dynamics has generated a youth cult following over cars such as the Celica and the massively impressive Supra. Japan’s Tokyo Auto Salon is a yearly event that showcases Toyota’s incredible presence in the world of tuners and modders.
Powering the Vios internationally are a pair of petrol and diesel engines. The 1.8 l dual VVTi engine churns out an impressive 140 PS of power and a max torque of 173 Nm. The Japanese car maker also offers the Vios with a more frugal 1.4 l turbocharged oil burner. The diesel engine puts out 88 PS of power. While the the diesel mill may seem underpowered, the main objective of the Vios diesel will be fuel economy and the 1.4 l turbo may just trump the segment leading City’s mileage of 26km/l. Both engines come mated to a six speed manual while the petrol variant is also offered with a seven speed CVT (automatic) gearbox.
Toyota has been missing in action for quite some time now and the manufacturer has slowly been reduced to selling commercial vehicles. With its entry into the C segment, the Japanese automaker may be able to regain its position here in India. Incredibly popular in markets such as Thailand and the Philippines, the sedan has seen great success in markets mirroring factors of our own. All in all, 2015 should be an exciting year for Toyota.
General Motors (USA) is on a successful spree by marketing the Chevrolet Colorado as well as its counterpart, the GMC Canyon. Pickup trucks have a huge market in America and successfully superseded the Chevrolet S-10 as well as the GMC Sonoma compact pickup trucks. The history of the Colorado takes us back to 2004 when the first generation of these pickups drove to fame.

Trouble for Colorado:
Although this is a very successful model and has around 30,000 trucks pre-ordered, this has exceeded GM’s expectations. However, the problem persists with the delivery issues. General Motors have stopped delivery orders for the 2015 Chevrolet Colorado because the airbags on the driver’s side have been allegedly wired incorrectly and various vehicles produced has been affected.
According to the statement from GM, the problem, “affects the vehicles’ two-stage airbag system by reversing the deployment sequence and disrupting the deployment timing of the driver airbag stages.” That simply means, in an accident the bag may not work correctly.
The affected trucks are still on GM’s assembly line, they are in transit or unsold at the dealers across America. The company is figuring out a way to repair this problem and the existing units sold shall also be taken care of.
Albeit the minor problems that persist with the safety on this truck, the Chevrolet Colorado 2015 retains its pride as one of the most trust worthy pickup truck in America along with the Canyon and is certainly a great deal breaker for the mid size pickup truck.
Wanna know about a best selling convertible sports car in history? yeah, we are talking about the Mazda MX-5. It was released by Mazda as MX-5 in North America and as roadster in Japan. It is a two seater convertible with a front engine, rear engine drive layout and are manufactured in Hiroshima, Japan.

2015 MAZDA MX-5 MAITA:
Mazda made this vehicle aiming for a pure fun in driving a light weight sports car and has also maintained the same in the new fourth generation. It comes in three formats: Sport, Club and grand Touring. We will now got through each segment of the vehicle.
ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION:
The vehicle has front mounted engine with rear wheel drive. It is powered by 1999 cc, four cylinders, 16 valve engine with variable valve train technology. It produces a beaming power of 167 hp @ 7000 rpm of the manual transmission and 157 hp @ 6700 rpm for automatic transmission. The maximum power comes at high rpm considering the sports race target in mind. It has an electronic controlled port fuel injection with tuned intake system. Tuning of intake in certain range of rpm helps in achieving high torque in that rpm range and can be commonly seen in race cars. Engine being one of the heavy parts in the vehicle has been manufactured mostly out of aluminum alloy to reduce the vehicle weight. The vehicle comes with a range of 5-speed or 6-speed manual transmission and 6- speed automatic transmission. In manual transmission, a differential with torque sensing limited slip is also installed.
SUSPENSION, STEERING AND BRAKES:
The ride and handling of sports cars relies on how your suspension, steering and brakes perform on different road conditions especially during high speed cornering. Front is equipped with double wishbone suspension and multi link bars are installed in rear of the vehicle. All the suspension components are made of aluminum. Shock absorbers are gas filled which help in better comfort and ride .Stabilizers are installed both in front and rear to reduce the rolling tendency and make vehicle stable in the cornering situations. Steering is of rack and pinion type with hydraulic power assisted system. In order to improve the braking efficiency at high speeds, all the wheels have vented disc brakes where vents help in coiling of the brakes.
Convertible type cars are known for their exterior styling and appearance. Vehicle has been designed to allow efficient air flow over the body. Under hood flow is guided to the rear by the rear diffusers. The exterior styling of the vehicle has been an important parameter in its success. 5.3 L (LM7) V8 and 6.0 L (LQ9) V8 gasoline engines with 4-speed (4L65-E) auto transmission with a wheelbase of 116 inches and 130 inches for the ESV and EXT variants powered the vehicles. The new models had a new and revised Chassis. The four wheel versions had the “StabiliTrak” feature (electronic stability control system) and the vehicles had power adjustable pedals, satellite radio, second-row bucket seats as well as a tire pressure monitoringsystem, During 2006 the platinum edition of the Escalade was introduced that was priced around $ 71,000. Cadillac Escalade isn’t getting the best of 2014. Another recent news suggests that on August 20th 2014 Cadillac dealers are frustrated due to the lag in getting the new Escalades. The time from when the Escalades leave the delivery line till they reach the showroom is quite long and the information on tracking and status of the vehicles are always on hold. The customers are quite upset and the dealerships have put a stop to taking pre-orders. Customers who have placed orders in Feb 2014 are still waiting for their luxury SUV’s to arrive. Let’s hope Cadillac takes care of this issue at the earliest.

The Escalades started going on sale from April 2014 and are being assembled at the Arlington Plant in Texas. The 4-door SUV has a classy front engine rear wheel drive and a four wheel drive option.
Cadillac started a campaign to promote the all new Escalade on the 14th of August 2013 and posted online teasers on the 23rd of September 2013. There was a YouTube page named “Escalade Reveal” with a countdown to unveil the new SUV. Promotions were unconventional and they sure made the buyers impatient.
The new Escalade sports a 6.2 Liter EcoTec3 V8 Flex Fuel Engine with 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque; all of this is mated to a six-speed auto transmission. This new engine has a revolutionary coil-over front suspension and five-link rear setup.
The four-wheel drive Escalade does 0-60 in 6.4 seconds, which is quite impressive for a gigantic SUV.
The EPA model returns 17 miles per gallon (15 city and 21 highway) combined while the four-wheel drive model delivers 16 miles per gallon (14 city and 21 highway) combined.
