Face Off: Fiat Linea vs Skoda Rapid

Italian car maker Fiat has been struggling in the Indian market for years now. Fiat’s first outing in the Indian car market proved disastrous for the company. While the company’s range was impressive, expensive spare parts, poor after sales services and lack of service centers quickly proved to be the Italian manufacturer’s downfall. This time around, Fiat is back with a refreshed range and an all new dealer and service center network to keep fans of the brand happy as well as to attract new ones. To keep pace in the heavily contended C2 segment, Fiat has recently updated its Fiat Linea sedan. We take a look at what the new car has to offer against the impressive albeit often overlooked Skoda alternative, the Skoda Rapid.


Fiat Linea:

The 2014 Linea doesn’t see too many changes save for a few chrome embellishments and slightly reworked bumpers. While the changes do not drastically change the sedan’s looks, they do add a bit of upmarket feel to the car. Sadly however, the Linea’s design is quite dated and fails to stand out from the crowd of zesty Fords, futuristic Hyundai’s and timeless Skoda’s. However, a Fiat’s true selling point isn’t its exterior, it’s driving dynamic. Sadly, this does not excuse the Italian manufacturer’s lack of inspiring design for what is currently one of three models on sale here in India.

Skoda Rapid:

Skoda, as always, has done an impressive job on the Rapid. Although the car may not turn heads wherever it goes, the understated elegance coupled with the classic Skoda touch is a match made in heaven. While the car may be more than three years old now, the Skoda Rapid is still as fresh as it was when it first made its debut here in India.

Fiat Linea:

The interiors of the new Linea are quite impressive. A combination of beige and black gives the cabin a premium and sporty feel lacking in most cars in its range. The updated dashboard features a black center console with a secondary unit for climate control. The impressive ambient lighting bathes the Linea’s cabin in a beautiful amber. Steering mounted controls give the driver access to the infotainment system. Rear legroom is sufficient, headroom on the other hand is quite less and tall passengers may feel a bit cramped at the back.

Skoda Rapid:

The Skoda Rapid is almost four years old now and its age is now beginning to show, predominantly with its interiors. The dull grey and beige interiors are quite lackluster. Although the Rapid comes with automatic climate control and a fully loaded infotainment system, the lack of steering mounted controls and dated green backlight of the instrument cluster and the infotainment system gives the Rapid a rather unattractive cabin.

Round 2 Winner: Fiat Linea !


Fiat Linea:

The Linea is offered with two engine options. The first being the 1.4 L T-Jet petrol engine that produces 112 HP at 5000 RPM and 207 Nm of torque at 2200 RPM. Fiat’s diesel Linea is powered by a 1.3 L MultiJet unit that produces 92 HP @ 4000 RPM and 209 Nm of torque @ 2000 RPM.

Unlike the Skoda Rapid, the Linea is offered only with a 5 speed manual gearbox.

Skoda Rapid:

Skoda offers both petrol and diesel options for the Rapid. The petrol powered variant houses a 1.6 L unit that produces 104 HP and 153 Nm of torque. It comes equipped with both a 5 speed manual as well as a 6 speed automatic gearbox that gives a respectable but not class leading mileage of 15 km/l and 14.3 km/l respectively.

The 1.6 L turbocharged diesel mill powering the Rapid produces 104 HP and 250 Nm of torque. While the power figures may be approximately the same as its petrol counterpart, the diesel offers peak power and torque figures at a lower point of the rev range allowing for better movement is slow traffic conditions. The diesel too is offered with both a 5 speed manual as well as a 5 speed automatic.

Although Skoda Rapid may offer better gearbox options, Fiat’s mechanical engineering prowess is unrivaled. The company’s T-Jet and MultiJet systems are one of the best in the business.

The Drive:

Fiat is renowned for their extreme focus on driving dynamics. While other manufacturers are moving with the times by adopting technologies such as electric steering systems, Fiat has stuck with the classics to create an unadulterated driving experience. A risky move, but a move that works. The Linea is an absolute joy to drive and provides a familiar driving experience.

Skoda Rapid:

The Skoda Rapid exhibits extremely similar driving dynamics as well. Despite this however, the Fiat Linea feels like the more well balanced of the two. The Czech car maker stated that the Skoda Rapid will act as the brand’s experimental platform here in India. This means that we may be seeing an array of new variants with all new equipment inside the cabin as well as under the hood.

The Fiat Linea is an extremely well balanced car in almost every aspect. Save for the nearly ordinary exteriors, the Linea offers superb engines and beautiful interiors. With an improved service center network and updated lineup, the Italian manufacturer may soon make a sizable dent in the Indian car market.

With the huge success of the Octavia and Superb, Skoda has honestly ignored a car that could have easily become No. 1 in its segment. This time hopefully, we might see a new and improved Rapid to take on cars such as the Linea, Verna and City. With Skoda’s design finesse coupled with VolksWagen’s engineering capability, the Rapid has the potential to become an icon of the masses, similar to what the original Octavia did for the company. Until then however, Fiat Linea is the clear winner.

Let’s talk about a car which was well-known throughout the world with its performance in its class. Can you guess it? Ok, here’s the clue, the car which was featured in “Two fast, two furious” and Jackie Chan’s “Who Am I”. Yes the car which had a glorious history in the past and probably the best car that Mitsubishi felt proud of building – It’s the Mitsubishi Lancer. Lancer is a compact car produced by the Japanese manufacturer Mitsubishi Motors since 1973.

Until 1992, Lancer was developed with a linked name under it and Mitsubishi used this car only for races such WRC and Dakar rally only, but at the beginning of 1992 Mitsubishi has introduced Lancer independently. So it has around 4 decades of history embedded in it. This is the car which made Mitsubishi flag waving around all the 7 continents in the world with different names in different continents. First generation (1992-1994):

This was the first generation car from lancer. It is powered by a 2.0 DOHC engine. This sports mechanical plate type LSD’s whereas the successive Lancer models have rear mechanical plate type LSD’s. Performance wise this is a great model as it has a top speed of 228 KMPH, but safety features like ABS, power windows and seats are absent.

Introduced with enhancements such as wheelbase adjustments, front sway bar gets lighter and handling improvements. It also has the same GSR as the RS model.

It was named after the legendary sports car rally driver Tommi Mäkinen and it won WRC rally championship for that year.

Seventh Generation (2001-2003):

In this generation Mitsubishi Lancer cars major changes were applied on the car Chassis and Drive Trans. Automatic Drive Tran and Chassis Tweaks were introduced in to the car. A new model GT-A (gentlemen express edition) was added in the Line-up excluding GSR, RS, and RS-2. This model was introduced and discontinued in the same year 2002 and did not appear in any generations after the 7th generation. But the same GT-A gear box was used in the 9th generation model. The major enhancements include spoiler enhancements, light improvements, deluxe interior and exterior specs are introduced. After 4th generation this model is the total improved one.

Eighth Generation (2003-2005):

In this generation 6 speed manual gear box was introduced along with the 5 speed manual, super active yaw control was also introduced. In this generation another two variants were introduced along with GSR and RS, those models are MR RS and MR GSR. The GSR and RS were having the 5-speed gear box and while the new MR GSR and MR RS were having 6-speed gear box. Enkei wheels, Brembo Brakes and Bilstein shocks were introduced to enhance the performance aspects of the car. It is one of the most successful models in the whole Mitsubishi Lancer series and is taught to be one of the first lancer car introduced in US and gained huge popularity.

Ninth Generation (2005-2007):

This generation was first exhibited in Geneva Motor Showto market it in both Japan and Europe. In this along with those 4 variants 2 other variants were introduced GT and MR Tuned by RALLIART.  The MR Tuned by RALLIART was based on Tommi Mäkinen Edition which was released during 1999. The GT version is a blend of both RS and some aspects of GSR model with a revised 5 gear box. This generation was also introduced in U.K with the names FQ-300, 320, 340, FQ-360 and MR FQ-360. Along with UK the car was introduced in Philippines too. So with this generation Mitsubishi Lancer gained Europe and as well as some parts of Asian markets too.

This is the present generation of Mitsubishi Lancer cars and this generation begins in 2007 and continuing until now with the new Lancer Evolution. As previous generations faced tremendous success, this generation Lancer cars concentrates on reaching worldwide production. Hence it released the tenth generation model all over the world starting with Asiatic countries such as Japan, China, India, Philippines, Malaysia and Europe and as well as United States, Germany, Australia and New Zealand. Review: Styling


The exterior of this car looks amazing and the body of the car looks very aggressive, and thanks to its muscular body line. Mitsubishi states that “This body is a mix match of all lancers which were released from the beginning”, so this car is carrying the legacy of lancer design. The best thing when it comes to the exterior of this car is the bumper. If we observe the lancer history, bumpers always get major changes. They are getting stronger and act as a signature element of the Mitsubishi Lancer. The 2014 Mitsubishi Lancer also have same two variants as always : The MR and GSR. These are some differences in between these two models.

This is one of the very few cars people buy almost exclusively for the performance that the car produces rather than the luxury. But this model has the luxury item too. In terms of interiors, the car looks very neat and clean. Review: Engine and performance

This car (both GSR and RS) is powered by 2.0-liter Turbocharged 16-valve I-4 with DOHC and MIVEC which generates peak torque range up to 300 @ 4000 RPM and the horsepower generates up to 291. The engines are same in both GSR and RS model, the major difference between them is GSR has 6-speed gear box while RS has 5-speed gear box. The top speeds of both are same and ranges at 146mph and while GSR model can reach 0-60 at 4.5secs, for RS it was 4.9secs. The fuel economy for GSR model is 17 in city and 23 in highway, while for RS model 17 in city and 22 in highway.

Skoda Rapid Spaceback- An Overview

The Skoda Rapid which was launched in 2012 is bigger than the Fabia and smaller than the Octavia hatch. Keeping this in mind, Skoda recently launched its Skoda Rapid Spaceback for people looking forward to a more stylish and cheaper car. The Skoda Rapid Spaceback is a hatch version of the regular Skoda Rapid and with no doubt it looks way edgier than any hatch.

One thing that should be kept in mind is that the Skoda rapid spaceback is not an estate version of the regular skoda rapid and rather it is a traditional five door hatch. Spaceback offers a good suspension however; some exterior appearances like the long nose and short rear overhang can make the car look very peculiar. Comparing it with the regular Rapid, the Rapid spaceback is 180mm shorter in length but identical from the front grille to the rear doors. The rear obviously takes a shape of a conventional hatchback.


Coming to the interiors, the wheelbase of both the Rapids are same and therefore the spacious interiors remain by and large, unchanged. The Dash is made of hard and black plastic but the design is robust and sophisticated and same as the regular skoda rapid. Spaceback comes in with attractive 17-inch alloy wheels (Elegance version) and extra glass in the rear hatch. It is also decked up with improvements such as a revised multi-function steering wheel, a neater stereo installation, and new trims and seat fabrics, electro-mechanical power steering instead of a hydraulic set-up. The only problem with the ride is its over firmness. The boot space of this car is 415 litre but still roomier than any of its rival hatchbacks.

Skoda Rapid Spaceback is surely a thumbs up when it comes to space and style. The rear legroom is very much spacious followed by excellent headroom and many more storage spaces. There is a giant panoramic glass sunroof too. Other features include air-conditioning, remote central locking, electric front windows, a height-adjustable driver’s seat and an alarm. Mid-spec SE trim adds body-colored door handles and mirrors, 15-inch alloy wheels, a glove box, a multi-function steering wheel, Bluetooth, rear parking sensors, cruise control, front fog lights, electric rear windows and a front center armrest. The Elegance variant which is the top most variant also get bigger alloys, climate control, a height-adjustable passenger seat and many more! Skoda has also done some practical designing like the ice scraper which is concealed on the fuel tank cap, a multimedia device bracket to hold a phone, a removable waste basket in the door paneling holder and a warning vest holder under the driver’s seat.


Skoda has played very clever when it comes to the safety of its passengers. It comes with a wide range of safety measures such as ESC (Electronic Stability Control) including ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) and six airbags. When the curtain airbags are activated, it creates a wall to protect passengers in both the front and rear from potential head injuries.


Skoda Rapid spaceback comes in four variants- S, SE, Elegance and GreenLine specs. It comes with a 55 KW 1.2 Litre MPI engine which reaches 0-100 KM at 13.8 seconds and has a maximum speed of 173 KMPH. Similarly, it also comes with 63 KW/73 KW 1.2 Litre TSI engine. It also comes in diesel 1.6 TDI engine with different power outputs ranging from 66 KW and 77 KW. 66 KW 1.6 TDI and 90 KW 1.4 TSI engines are mated with seven speed DSG automatic transmission. The 90 KW 1.4 litre TSI engine reaches 100 km in 9.4 seconds having a maximum speed of 203km/h. Skoda Spaceback is an environment friendly car emitting Carbon dioxide ranging from 114-134 g/km.


Start stop system- The start stop system automatically switches off the engine when the vehicle is stopped thereby saving fuel and preventing the vehicle from emitting pollutants.

How does it work? When the driver stops the vehicle and shifts the gear to neutral, releasing the clutch pedal, the engine switches off automatically. The engine starts when the driver shift’s gears.

Energy recovery- What it basically does is makes the kinetic energy into usable electricity. This saves the fuel which would be otherwise used up to charge the battery.

Review: Engine & Performance:

This car is equipped with two different engines V6 (Low-end), V8 (High-End). Both of these engines are powered by the DOHC direct injection fuel system. The low end V6 can churn maximum power up to 311 horsepower and 293 pound-feet of torque and while the high-end V8 can produce a maximum amount of power up to 420 horsepower and 376 pound-feet of torque.  Both of these engines are powered by the all-new 8-speed transmission gear box for precise amount of power release. As far as the performance is considered, the car has the same ECO, NORMAL, Comfort mode in which the Eco-Mode offers higher rate of fuel-efficiency than the other two modes. The performance of this car on city roads is quite high with good turnings, decent fuel consumption and great power transmission.

The major advantage of this car is its suspension. The car is powered by standard 18-inch alloy wheels (Low-end), and 19-inch chrome wheels (High-end). To support both these two variants, KIA has offered an advanced, five-link, fully independent front and rear suspension. Due to this the car is resistant against the friction aspects, and the shock absorber absorbs the impacts.

The K900 is powered by several safety measures such as the Driver Information Display, distinctive airbags range as much as 9-Airbags with advanced shock absorption technology, and Knee Pad air bags, Surround View Monitor, Advanced Smart Cruise Control, Blind spot detection, ABS, Traction Control etc. These safety measures certainly increase the safety quotient of this car.

Overall the car looks quite good and has all the necessary features, but the interiors need to be improved to tackle the German flagships. The biggest factor that can help this car to gain momentum in the German market is its price tag, as the price looks pretty descent !

Auto Braking System:

With unreliable traffic and uncertain roads, the chances of colliding your car with another seem probable. However, Hyundai has equipped the new Genesis with an Automatic braking feature that works in coordination with inbuilt cameras as well as the radar sensors that detect any obstacle. You might not be able to view anything while driving your car during foggy conditions, but the genesis works with its “spidey like senses” that detect any obstacle. Imagine you are out with your wife or girlfriend (irrespective) after a thrilling shopping experience; odds are that both your hands would be full (with shopping bags)and the Hyundai Genesis is one friend that you can rely on. Once you are done shopping and move close to the car’s trunk (approx 3 ft) and stay for 3 seconds or so, the trunk would automatically open. In India one of the most popular types of cars are the Hatchback’s. A small sized car which can fit 5 people, fuel efficient and relatively economical to buy. Anywhere you look in an Indian city & you will for sure find a Hatchback. For years now Maruti Suzuki has ruled the Hatchback segment with a variety of cars for sale in this segment but in recent years they have come to face a lot of competition from other manufacturers. One of them is the mighty Volkswagen !

When Volkswagen introduced the Volkswagen Polo back in 2010 to the Indian market, the car came as a refreshing modern addition to the hatchback segment which seemed to be ageing a bit back then. The car was aggressively styled, spacious, had lots of modern technology fitted in, and was a lot sportier in terms of rid and handling than most of its competitors ( thanks to its stiff suspension ). But there was one part of the hatchback segment which seemed to be an unexplored territory in India.

The Hot Hatch

A hot Hatch is a sort of a hooligan version of the civilized hatchbacks many people use in their everyday lives. They look almost the same (few cosmetic changes are made at times to better performance) or exactly the same to the cars they are based on but aren’t the same under the hood. Around the world, the Hot Hatch range of horsepower is quite wide. They go from 120hp up to 250bhp. But in India this isn’t the case. Back in 2010 if someone wanted a hot hatch in India there wasn’t much choice to go for. There is the Punto sport ( 90HP) but many people (including this cars owner) looked away from fiat due to its poor after sales quality, interior quality, and service problems such as lack of spares.  One more reason for the lack of interest in this segment is that in India people do tend to lean toward to fuel efficiency and cutting down running costs rather than having a car that can make you smile wide as u depress your right foot. Volkswagen decided to give this category a shot with the Polo 1.6. Although VW has stopped production of this car in India (due to it not being able to become the hit they thought it would be, their current entry in this segment is the Polo TSI) it still remains a very appealing car to those petrol heads around town.

This specific Polo 1.6 belongs to a good friend of mine and he was very kind enough to allow me to drive it and do this review on it. He bought the car in April 2011 and has done about 14000kms on it and every time I see him drive it there never seems to be nothing but a smile on his face (there was one on my face too, when I drove it!) What makes this car appealing u might ask? Well let’s take a look at it in a bit more detail.

Exterior Design and looks:

The Volkswagen polo is a car which was designed keeping in mind the modern world. Most car manufacturers are designing their hatchback keeping the youth in mind (considering that nowadays hatchbacks are the cars which most people in their youths go for because of their pricing and value for money). The Volkswagen polo is one car which oozes modern design philosophy. Its aggressive styling and sharp lines are very striking and attractive to look and the same principle is followed all along the car.

The car’s front end is what is the most striking and distinctive to look at! The whole flow of aggressive and bold lines along the car starts from here. The uniquely styled headlights and bumper give the car a menacing look (at night there is no question on which car is behind you when you see those set of headlights). Although this car is styled in this manner, there is still a certain amount of fluidity in the whole overall shape of the car.

Due to the lack of a proper boot, the nice looking sharp lines come to a somewhat of an abrupt end. However Volkswagen has done its best to make the rear of this car as good as the front (tried & in my opinion the front looks very much better than the rear). The 15” alloy wheels look good too and suite the cars design very well.

When it comes the build quality of the car there is no doubt of the supremacy the German manufacturer holds in this area. The exterior feels very solid and very well put together. The quality of the body work Is very good and the finish as well. This is one area I feel Volkswagen has the edge over other cars in its segment although there are a few which run close with it – one being the Fiat Punto and the Honda Brio.

Interiors Design & Quality:

Take a look inside and the polo follows the same standards it does on the outside. The interior of the car feels very solid and the materials used are of quite a good quality. The Instrument cluster makes use of modern technology with a digital display which gives the driver information about fuel quantity and data from the trip computer such as fuel consumption average, real time consumption, range, and speed. The display itself is very clear and easy to read. There have been complaints that at night, especially on the highway the screen is a bit too bright and hampers visibility a bit but the owner of this car said he didn’t find the display disturbing at night and I too didn’t find it very disturbing while on the highway.So I guess we will leave this up to personal opinion.

The Center console is simple and functional in its design. It isn’t cluttered with buttons and the controls are simple and easy to use. The touch and feel of the controls too is solid as with whole of the car. However when it comes to comforts, the Polo 1.6 isn’t as well equipped as one would want. There is no climate control all thought the air conditioning is powerful and cools the car well. The music system doesn’t have AUX or Bluetooth capabilities but the speakers are powerful and clear lending to a more pleasurable drive.

The seats on the Polo 1.6 are comfortable and supportive to be in. The driver seat is height adjustable and the steering can be adjusted in rake and reach but the reach is limited to only 3-4 inches. The interior also comes in a nice dual tone beige and black color scheme. But all in all there is nothing to complain about with this interior, its solidly built and will last long into the cars life.

Engine & Driving Dynamics:

Now we come to the part which really sets this car apart from the others in its segment. The Engine!  The car is powered by a naturally aspirated 1.6L four cylinder engine which churns out 103bhp @ 5250 RPM and 153NM of torque @3750 RPM. In India these number are usually reserved for the mid-size sedan segment (By looking at these numbers itself anyone would come to think that this car is no slouch). It doesn’t let your expectations down. Initially it does take a bit to get going, but as the RPM needle crosses 1500 – 2000 RPM it comes alive and you suddenly find your body a little further away from the steering wheel if you weren’t leaning back into your seat already. Lean in to the throttle further and the engine just pulls all the way through up to the red line. This sensation of being pressed in your seat is also accompanied by a deep roar from the engine bay. However while idling I found that there is a minute lag in throttle response.

This hunk of an engine is mated to a Five-speed manual gearbox. The gearbox itself is slick and slots into gear very easily making changing gears a peach. But it lacks that mechanical feel and on a side note to engage reverse you have to push the gear leaver down and then push it into the direction of first gear. The gear ratios are more suited to city driving. On the highway due to the lack of low end torque you do need to downshift a gear to overtake but else this can take you up to some serious speeds which could get you into some serious trouble!

One place the Volkswagen polo seems to be different from the rest is its suspension tune. Whether you like It or not is up to personal opinion. Some people like having stiff suspension as it contributes to better handling characteristics and less body role during cornering and then there are the people who like to have a softer state of tune so that all the bumps and potholes are soaked up. Well, from day one the Volkswagen polo has been criticized a bit for having too harsh and stiff a ride, but I don’t mind it. For me it’s not that harsh it does a decent job of dealing with our constantly dug up and pothole ridden road (there are cars which deal with the roads much better e.g. Hyundai i20, but then again it can’t match up to the way this car takes the bends). The car feels planted at highway speeds and give the diver more confidence in driving the car. The steering is light which is perfect in the city but for highway driving a bit more weight would have been a lot better. The steering is a bit dull in feedback which is nice if u don’t want the steering constantly moving around to every bump and pothole forcing the tires to move, but if u prefer a steering with feedback then you might not fancy this one ( This is due to it being an electronic power steering rather than hydraulic).

All in all this is a nice car to drive. With its powerful engine and its good handling and road holding you find yourself wanting to spend more and more time with it and drive it on a nice highway till its tanks are empty (suggest you don’t though).

 Service & After Sales:

When it comes to VW’s service the owner said that delivery and availability of parts weren’t an issue with Volkswagen polo. However he did mention that if he had any specific technical complaint the ability of the VW’s mechanics to troubleshoot and isolate the problem wasn’t good enough. He once found himself complaining about the same problem twice. Each time the representatives said they found the issue and fixed it but the problem lingered. Only on the third attempt was the problem actually resolved.

Where The Volkswagen polo 1.6 isn’t up to mark:

–         The initial throttle response is a bit slow.

–         There isn’t as much low-end torque as expected for a petrol engine, so for overtaking (especially in a fully loaded car) on highways you do have to down shift a gear to get the engine to its peak torque output.

–         For people who like riding in comfort this is not a car for you in terms of ride quality. You do feel the bumps and potholes in the car due to its stiff suspension.

–         The car isn’t packed with as many features as it competitors like the Hyundai i20, Fiat Punto, and the Honda Brio.

Bottom Line:

This car was definitely a hot hatch for the Indian market (I say it because VW has stopped production of this car in India). It was most definitely an appealing car to look at and drive and would get your adrenaline pumping when you want it too. But if any company including Volkswagen wants to bring out a true hot hatch and contend seriously, then I think they should take things a step further (Maybe more powerful engines and better handling).

Face Off: Nissan Micra vs Renault Pulse

The Renault Nissan Alliance has given birth to a vast array of cars for the Indian market. With an impressive (and almost identical) lineup of cars from both sides, one can be forgiven for his indecisiveness in choosing between the two brands. We take a look at the Nissan Micra and Renault Pulse to see which car is the better bet.


Nissan Micra:

The Micra was never the most appealing hatch in the Indian market. Its cute-sy design failed to impress and with cars such as the Fluidic i20 and Volkswagen Polo entering the market, the Micra was in need for a major revamp. That revamp came in the form of a makeover last year to improve its image among buyers.

Although the latest facelift does improve the Micra’s looks, the car’s proportions still look out of place. However, with its aggressively styled headlamps and revamped rear end, the new Micra is a drastic improvement over the previous gen model. Renault Pulse:

Unlike Nissan, the French car maker has retained the original design of the hatchback. However, with subtle structural changes such as the re-sizing of the grille, altered contours and its large Renault badge, Renault has endowed the Pulse with a more masculine character.

However, with its dated design, the Pulse loses out to the more recent Micra facelift.

Round 1 Winner: Nissan Micra !


Nissan Micra:

Much of the new Micra’s facelift manifests itself with its interiors. The piano black center console and Nissan’s dual display system are the two most eye catching design elements of the Micra’s cabin. While the larger display is used by the infotainment system, the secondary screen displays the AC settings.

Renault Pulse:

The Pulse’s interiors are relatively rather dull and drab. The company’s choice of colors of beige and grey all over makes the Pulse’s cabin look quite cheap. The choice of plastics and fabric are not up to the mark as well.

Since the Pulse and Micra share the same platform, the interiors of the Renault hatch are almost identical to the first generation Micra.

Round 2 Winner: Nissan Micra !


Nissan Micra:

The Micra is powered by both petrol and diesel engines. The petrol variant make use of a 1.2 L three cylinder engine that produces 76 HP at 6000 RPM and 104 Nm of torque @ 4000 RPM. Although the 1.2 L petrol unit produces a respectable amount of power, the engine could do with some remapping for better accessibility of peak power and torque. Power is sent to the front wheels via a 5 speed manual with a CVT gearbox also available.

The diesel engine is a 1.5 DCi unit that produces 65 HP @ 4000 RPM and a peak torque of 160 Nm @ 2000 RPM. The diesel Micra is equipped with a 5 speed manual only.

Renault Pulse:

The Pulse uses the very same engines except for slight changes to the performance numbers. The 1.2 L petrol mill produces 74 HP @6000 RPM and 104 Nm of torque at 4000 RPM. The 1.5 L diesel mill outputs a peak power figure of 63 HP at 4000 RPM and 160 Nm of torque at 2000 RPM.

Although the Pulse produces slightly lesser numbers, the difference in power is almost negligible with no tangible differences in top speeds or acceleration rates.

Round 3 Winner: Draw !

The Drive:

Nissan Micra:

One major issue with any Nissan developed car is the stiff clutch. Although the clutch pedal and clutch movement feels sturdy, the Japanese automaker could have added a lighter movement to allow ease of use under heavy traffic conditions. The Nissan Micra’s compact structure means that the 1.2 L petrol is relatively quite powerful and the Micra that works well under heavy stress.

The inclusion of ABS across a majority of the models and the choice of two or four air bags means the Micra is also one of the safest hatches as well.

Renault Pulse:

The Pulse, although identical to the Micra improves on the Nissan hatchback’s driving dynamics. The clutch pedal had just enough pressure to not be a nuisance in city traffic but offered enough feel for accurate clutch movements. The engine was extremely responsive and just as much fun as the Micra. However, the brakes left much to be desired. The Spongy and vague feel greatly depreciates driver confidence.

Unlike the Micra, the Pulse slightly skimps on safety features such as ABS and airbags along a number of variants. Hopefully the French automaker will understand that safety is the need of the hour and introduce a better set of options in the Pulse’s next iteration.

Round 4 Winner: Nissan Micra !


Although both cars are almost identical, the results speak for themselves. The Nissan Micra is a newer offering that adds better safety options across a larger number of variants and its updated interiors are far more appealing than the Pulse’s dated beige cabin. The inclusion of an automatic gearbox also means that the Nissan Micra is an option to an increasingly automatic inclined audience.

The power to this car comes from the supercharged 6.2-liter and 3.6-liter V-8 code named LSA, which is considered as the most predominant V8’s ever built till date. This engine gives the car monstrous power – enough to drive off the roads. Pontiac G8 – the Police car

Today lets speak about a car which was actually “The Lasting Standing Car from Pontiac Clan” – the Pontiac G8. It is stated as the last standing car from Pontiac because after this car was released to the public, general motors which runs the Pontiac Company announced that it has decided to suspend the Pontiac Brand due to low investment and Bankruptcy, and hence the tale of Pontiac came to an end in the automobile history!

The last release from Pontiac is G8 and today I am going to review about this car. This car was first unveiled at 2007 Chicago Auto Show. It was the first rear wheel drive offered by the company since its 1986 releases of Bonneville and Parisienne. G8 was based on the famous General motor’s GM Zeta Platform.

After this major statement of shedding the company, the cars left in the company’s inventory were offered at a discount of $2000-$5000. The cars left after the sales discount were given to the U.S Government and now the Pontiac G8 serves as Police Vehicle for Los-Angeles Police Department (LAPD). It was also featured as a police department car in the famous game “Need for speed: Most Wanted”.

The 2014 Scion FR-S is powered by a 2.0-liter horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine which can generate a decent amount of power up to 200 horsepower. When it comes to car interiors, they are decent and not as luxurious as in other sport variants. The car interiors are filled with some soft plastics which in turn decreases the interior looks. When it comes to space quotient, the car cabin looks quite spacious and in the front there is enough leg space but this quotient gets decreased when it comes to the rear seating as they were designed by considering the children in a family. However they can be folded in order to get some extra boot space. The black coated leather in interiors look neat and clean.
