The Limited Edition Duster from Renault comes packed with surprise and fun. It carries various elements like Eco mode, Gearshift indicator and Cruise control with speed limiter, amongst others. The car will be powered by the 1.5-litre dCi engine and offers a choice of two power outputs, 110PS and 85PS. The powerful 110PS version has a six-speed manual transmission with gear ratios perfectly matched to the engine’s output with a fuel efficiency of 19.64kmpl (ARAI). The next generation Ford Endeavour was first previewed as the ‘Everest concept’ model last year in Sydney, Australia. Now, that Ford has revealed the vehicle’s production ready version as well, the all new Endeavour seems to be very close to its official launch date. The production version of the 2015 Ford Endeavour is exactly the same as its concept, except the new alloys.

Engine & transmission
Spreading its boundaries across global markets, the 2015 Ford Endeavour is likely to drive with 2 different engine choices. The 2.2 liter four cylinder diesel and 3.2 liter five cylinder diesel engine. India will most likely carry the 2.5 liter and 3 liter diesel mill. To enhance performance, this vehicle will bid farewell to the current 5-speed manual transmission and introduce a 6-speed gearbox. This would also enhance the fuel efficiency of the new car.

Exterior Design:

The Exterior design of the Ford Endeavour is on the company’s Edge design philosophy. The next-gen model is expected to be more premium than its precursor. The vehicle will also offer enhanced off-road capabilities owing to its new ladder frame chassis. Ford has also endowed new independent coil-spring system at the vehicle’s rear to enhance its drive experience. The new Endeavour will boast of the new ‘Terrano Response’ 4 wheel drive system with adjusting traction control and other technological improvements that will really deliver an overall enhanced off-road performance.

The vehicle’s styling at the front resembles the concept showcased earlier with an upright three-part grille, small sweptback headlamps, a stylish front bumper under-guard flows onto the bumper to merge into the fog lamps. Move to the side and the design theme from the concept continues, with the raked front windshield, a slightly sloping roofline, up-swept window-line and a slight body sculpting near the bottom of the doors. You can also see that the SUV will feature subtle roof-rails, which sit flush onto the roof. At the rear, the Endeavour gets a new tailgate mounted spoiler, which is different from the one on the concept car. Rest of the design though is similar to the concept, with the large split tail lamps, the chunky chrome garnish and the boot lid-mounted number plate holder.

The all-new Ford Endeavour is expected to be tagged in the price bracket of Rs. 18 to Rs. 25 lakhs in India. The prices in Australia are already out and the top-end Titanium variant of this car is priced at AUS $76,990. The base variant retails for AUS $54,990, while the mid variant will go on sale for $60,990.

Renault KWID Preview

French automotive giant Renault has been a prominent player globally. With the launch of cars varying across various segments, the company has shown a keen interest towards the budget car market. That apart, the SUV segment has seen an incredible up rise in India. Taking such a lucrative opportunity in hand, Renault in collaboration with its partner Nissan is working on the new style statement for budget conscious buyers. Renault has unveiled a hatchback-based crossover called the KWID.

Named after the concept car that it unveiled at the 2014 Auto Expo, the KWID, is a five-seater crossover underpinned by the French automaker’s CMFA platform and will be produced at their Chennai factory with 98 per cent localization. This vehicle looks the right amount of quirky and has inbred eccentricity. Set to launch in September 2015, Renault’s compact car, the Kwid, made its global debut in India on August 20, 2015 at the 2014 Delhi Motor Show. This sub-4meter car is allegedly the smallest crossover in the company’s portfolio. Though the vehicle will fall in the price bracket of Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 and Hyundai Eon, the Kwid will create a new mini crossover segment in India; and it will be lot more spacious and feature-rich than aforementioned rivals. Looking for something exciting in this article? the company is planning to launch it at a starting price of Rs. 3 lakh, while the top-end model will go up to Rs. 4 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

Interestingly, this compact SUV may be offered with both a 4-door and 2-door configuration.

In the meantime, here is a review on the KWID:


Under the KWID’s hood will be an all-new 800cc, 3-cylinder petrol unit that has been developed by Renault-Nissan alliance. The engine should produce around 50bhp and 90Nm of torque. Mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox, this car is likely to debut an AMT from the Renault-Nissan stable. There will be no diesel model but a 1.0-litre model with higher power figures will arrive six months later. It is also possible that there may be a CNG model but this will only materialize based on demand.


Measuring 3680mm in length and 1580mm in width, the Kwid will be the most spacious vehicle in its league. It will also have the segment-leading ground clearance of 180mm, which is, in fact, more than several crossovers/SUVs in India. The car does have a very futuristic and perky off-road lifestyle SUV look. This vehicle has lines similar to that of the Datsun GO but now gets body cladding, flared wheel arches and a forward leaning stance giving it a muscular appearance. It is the first car in the Indian market to debut the French automaker’s honeycomb grille and new headlight design. It gets an aggressive front bumper design that extends outwards and in the top spec variants houses the fog lamps.

The side profile reveals the heavily flared wheel arches and forward leaning stance. The windscreen sharply rakes towards the rear. There is plastic cladding at the base of the doors, which are the color of the wheel arches and basically serve the purpose of rub rails.

At the rear, the glass section is small and slopes forward while there is a sharp lip on the middle of the boot door. The plastic cladding sits right below the boot door and houses the number plate. Overall, its design shouldn’t come off as a disappointment.


The KWID shares same interior from the Pulse which is basically the layout of the Nissan Micra. However, while the layout is the same, the feature list will have many first in segment items. It gets a fully digital instrumental cluster, Media-NAV infotainment system, front power windows and AC. While the instrument cluster, power windows and AC are expected to be standard across all variants, we believe that the Media-NAV infotainment system will only be offered in the top-spec variants.  Other key features are piano black centre console with a chrome-surround, plastic cladding on sides, etc.

Price and competition:

The KWID is expected to be priced in the range of Rs 3 lakh to Rs 4.5 lakh and will compete with the Chevrolet Spark, Tata Nano, Datsun Go and the Hyundai Eon. It will be launched during the festive season and most likely with an introductory price.

Bottom line:

The KWID is certainly an exciting deal that is too hard to miss out. The only possible challenge for Renault is to increase the sales and ensure that the service of the KWID is taken care of. Players like Maruti, Tata and Hyundai have stronger presence in terms of service. Let’s wait and watch if Renault’s Budget car strategy would really monetize or will the competitors put the car at shame.

3D-printed car- Becoming a reality sooner than you think

Progressing with great strides, the Automobile sector is developing like crazy. To nature’s advantage, the industry holds its sensitivity towards a cleaner and greener environment. Although there are plenty of alternative sources to the diminishing natural gas production, the demand for newer alternatives is always felt.

A California-based company has come up with a crazy yet mind-blowing idea that they have successfully presented in the form of a prototype. So named Blade, the supercar is supposedly a creation that could dramatically reduce “the pollution, materials and capital costs” that are incurred and compromised during manufacture.

Divergent Micro-factories was founded by Kevin Czinger, who also founded Coda Automotive.  With Coda, he was focused on cleaning up the highways by promoting electric vehicle adoption. Coda’s electric car flopped, and the company filed for bankruptcy in 2013, emerging as the newly organized Coda Energy, a company that remains focused on energy storage for commercial and industrial applications.

But with the change in time and the enthusiasm of a true entrepreneur, the company has finally introduced the Blade to the world.

Kevin Czinger has spent most of his career in the automotive industry. One day he realized that no matter how fuel-efficient or how few tailpipe emissions the modern car has, the business of car manufacturing is destroying the environment.

3D printing of metal radically changes that. By looking at 3D printing not for that overall structure but to create individual modular structures that can be combined, that 3D printing transforms everything,” says Czinger.
He also says that 3D printing transforms everything by changing the way the structural components of cars are fabricated. Currently cars are pieced together on long assembly lines inside large factories that use massive amounts of energy. Even the most fuel-efficient car has a large carbon footprint before ever leaving the plant.

Czinger and his team’s approach were to take the large plant out of the equation. To accomplish this they printed the modular pieces that are used to connect carbon rods that make up the Blade’s chassis.

The construction of the Blade is purely put of carbon fiber. By using carbon fiber instead of steel or aluminum for the body, the entire vehicle only weighs 1400 pounds (635kg), giving it twice the weight to horsepower ratio of a Bugatti Veyron.
The 3D printed chassis is only 102 pounds and has the same strength and safety protection as a frame made out of steel,” says Brad Balzer, the lead designer on the project.

The focus was mainly on the aesthetics of the car because gaining the attention of people is of vital importance. With visions of the hot rod building he did when he was younger, Czinger began formulating a simpler, less centralized concept of auto manufacturing based around a 3D-printed aluminum chassis joint he calls a node. Melting aluminum powder into form using a laser-based printing system makes the node. Individual nodes hold structural carbon fiber tubes together, building up a modular chassis like a sort of upsized children’s building kit.

Divergent says that its node-based chassis weighs some 90 percent less than an average car chassis and requires far less material and energy to produce. In fact, in introducing the concept, it carried the nodes and tubes for an entire chassis in a 120-liter shoulder bag. Divergent believes its 3D-printed nodes are analogous to the Arduinos that have opened up innovation within electronics, hiding technological complexity within an interface that is easy to work with. By using 3D-printed nodes, Divergent says that it can drastically cut down on the amount of space, time and investment required for automotive manufacturing. Once printed, the nodes allow a chassis to be constructed in a matter of minutes in a small, simple micro factory space. No longer will building a profitable car require the resources of a global corporation. In fact, the company’s plan has already started infiltrating the auto industry.



The Blade has been pampered like a queen. It has the chops to claim the title of world’s first 3D-printed supercar. The car has a 700-hp bi-fuel (gas/CNG) four-cylinder turbo engine and purportedly has the ability to sprint from 0 to 96.5 km/h in a flat two seconds. Reduction in carbon footprint is a positive gift to the environment and insane speed is the gift to the driver of the Blade.



Well, the price of this 3D printed car that carries carbon fiber reinforced ABS plastic coating ranges from $18,000 to $ 30,000. Although the official figures aren’t out, this is the anticipated dollar.

Beyond just building the Blade, Divergent hopes to “dematerialize and democratize” the auto manufacturing industry by putting its 3D-printed build technology into the hands of small start-ups. This will allow those start-ups to avoid the extremely cost-intensive barriers of traditional auto manufacturing and innovate new vehicles out of micro factories of their own. Divergent estimates the cost of developing a traditional car factory at US$1 billion, putting the cost of a micro factory with 10,000-car/year capacities at around $20 million.

At present, there are two Mahindra vehicles that are constantly getting spotted while testing rigorously on the Indian roads. On one hand, there is the 2014 Mahindra Scorpio facelift which is getting spied in and out every now and then, and is expected to be major launch in this year’s festive season. On the other, there is the Mahindra S101 compact SUV (TUV 300), which is going to be Mahindra’s sub-4 meter answer to the very popular Ford Ecosport.

Mahindra certainly shows its anxiety when it comes to the launch of the new compact SUV. With an offering like Quanto that lacks the desired luster, Mahindra is cautious about the design language. The new Mahindra compact SUV, which is still codenamed as the S101 is quite likely to be named TUV 300.


Expected to launch sometime in 2015, the TUV300 will snuggle into the 4-meter category and is sure to avail plenty of tax benefits. The S101 or TUV 300 is going to be an exciting concept that is going to be packed with features to enjoy loads of comfort and entertainment. Mahindra is among the first to explore depths of SUV design and technology. These vehicles look sporty and stylish at the same time, evident with the grand design of XUV500. With competitors like Renault Duster, VW taigun, Ford Ecosport on the lookout, Mahindra is aware of the level of features and value additions it has to offer to attain control of the market.

To add some sort of excitement, here is a possible list of features that might enthrall you.  The TUV 300 might be loaded with features like Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD). Furthermore, it might have Engine Immobilizer, Child-Protection Door Locks and Central Locking. There is also digital Clock, Tachometer, Low Fuel Warning, Parking Brake Indicator, Door Ajar Warning etc that can be considered.

For lighting the SUV gets Front Fog Lights, Rear Fog Lights, Headlight Leveler, ORVM Turn Indicators, interior Room Lamp, Standard Halogen Headlamps, Music System, AUX Compatibility, USB Compatibility, AM/FM Radio, Roof Antenna, Bluetooth Compatibility, Front and rear Headrest (Adjustable), Folding Rear Seats and Driver Seat Adjustment are definitely a great combination.


The Interiors on the TUV 300 are supposedly the plush type that comes packed with a grand punch. The inclusion of Dual Tone Interiors, Glove Box, Day & Night Inside Rear View Mirror and Leather Steering and Gear knob can be expected. To assure safety of passenger and rider there are Seatbelt Reminder, Dual Horns, First-aid kit, Rear View Camera, Rear Seat Belts, Airbags, Front Seat Belts and Parking Sensors.

The TUV 300 is expected to have a seating arrangement of 3+3. This could also mean the introduction of a bench seat in the front row and hence, the gear lever will have to be placed on the dashboard instead of the floor. This is exactly what was spotted in some recently released spy shots that revealed a part of the TUV 300’s interiors flaunting a dash mounted gearshift lever.




The TUV 300 is expected to come in all new Diesel Engine on Lines of Mhawk – yet Powerful at around 100 PS Power with Option of 16 Inch Alloy Wheels in Top End along with 6 Inches Touchscreen Infotainment System as seen in XUV500 – would compete against likes of Ecosport, Duster and Creta 1.4 Litre Engine. The car will be powered by 1493 cc 1.5L, turbocharged diesel engine which can offer 100 BHP (expected) power and 240 NM (expected) torque on ride. Engine mated to 5-speed manual gears for a smooth transmission.



The muscularly designed car has Alloy Wheels, Spare Wheel and Tubeless Tyres. The car will be appealing on exterior and will features and options like Tinted Glass, Roof Rails, Door Black out Tapes, Body Colored Bumpers, Body Colored Door Handles, Spare Tyre Cover, Locking Wheel Nut for Spare Wheel, Body Colored Outside Mirrors, Mud Flaps, Both Side, Electrically adjustable mirrors etc.

Start up companies Self-Driving India

Innovation and creativity are two of the most casually thrown words in the start up world. But its usage is what defines the companies. Taxi’s have been used extensively in India and worldwide, they have been the bread and butter for a select few. I remember the days in Goa when I used to rent bikes and use them to the point where I would term “vehicle abuse” Technology and innovation driven India was taking a huge turn into start up companies. Every individual, college pass out/drop out would have dreamt less of porn than dreaming about his or her own start up company. While some companies play it safe to sustain themselves for a couple of years, some take the bold road and risk it all.

Some of the companies that have risked it big are well known brand names that job aspirants look forward to. Self-driving in India has a huge potential and some companies are cashing in big time. Especially considering lecherous taxi drivers turning into chronic masturbators who get a hard on even when they lay eyes on a silencer. That’s definitely creepy and so, self-driving is a much safer means of traveling.  Why hire a chauffer driven car when you can drive it yourself? This is a nice concept that involves less risk and its more often than not a concept that Indians are getting comfortable with. Here is a list of a few start up companies that have seen the bigger picture and are creating a revolution:

Zoom Car:

A self-drive car sharing company whose head quarter is in Banglore. Started by David Back and Greg Moran, this company is fairly new and started its operations in February 2013. But don’t be fooled with the freshness, this company has copious brains that know the in and out of the industry. An American Duo started this company while they were studying at University of Pennsylvania.  After dropping out of their respective field, they came to India to pursue Zoom.

Humble Beginning; The company started with a fleet of 7 cars in Bangalore and had some of the best brains on board to make things function. The company has raised a total of $ 3 million in equity capital, which is pretty impressive.

The $ 1.5 million seed round was laed by New York Investment network Empire Angels. Zoom in their later years also partnered with companies like Ford and Mahindra that allowed them to become the first car rental company in India to offer an electric vehicle, the Reva E20 by Mahindra. It also included Ford Ecosport urban SUV. Zoom also works in coordination with local established real estate developers, hotels, universities as well as corporate IT companies to secure parking for its vehicles and offers pick-up points to its members.

Bla-Bla Cars: Christmas was around the corner and Frédéric Mazzella was under pressure to get to his family home in Fontenay-le-Comte, 300 miles outside Paris – but all the trains were full. After eventually getting a lift from his sister, he noticed most of the cars on the road were empty but for the driver. This was a vast inefficiency in his eyes – but one that got him thinking.

“The idea was to organize all the available seats in cars just like we organize all the available seats in planes and trains, with a real search engine, and this did not exist. There was only demand and no offer and organized in a very weird way in that you would have neighbors who would share a ride but you did not know where they were going and when,” he says.

This Paris-based company has around 6-million loyal customers spread across various countries. It basically links drivers with passengers who can buy seats.  According to the company, a million people use its website every month, keying in details of where they want to go and when, and getting a list of drivers heading to the same destination, with their journey history and a price – which can be a fraction of a ticket on public transport. As is with a typical start up scenario, BlaBla car had its share of struggle and brainstorming.

Current Stats:

The company is stationed across 19 countries and has proudly shared 3 billion miles. This concept is eco friendly too. It has an estimate of 7lakh tons of CO2 saved. Going mobile is one of the smartest decisions for huge start up companies to constantly be in touch with its prospects. The bla bla car app has around 5 million app users (both iOS and Android) and has a huge following of Facebook too. This French startup has raised $100 million that is led by Index Ventures. The owner says that Bla Bla car is a market place where you can find a driver who is driving from one city to another and book a seat in advance. While drivers make a bit of money, riders can travel cheap.


Self Drive rental cars are the latest trend among the young Indians. Rather than owning a car, it’s more economical to rent one.  Most metro cities have adapted to the economic way and have self-drive car rentals that are being picked up by people for short weekend trips or sometimes for moving intra-city as well.   Revv has a similar model to that of Zoom. Albeit the similarity, the company claims its model to be a mix of Zip car and Dominos. Delivering the car to the user is definitely a delight to lazy bones like me.

Doorstep delivery is a global first and no other company has tried this concept. Anupam was a junior partner with McKinsey and his job had much to do with hardcore execution at automotive manufacturing plants. The other partners in this venture also share an automotive background. Amidst the list of investors, there is also an inclusion of  the newly hired CEO of Myntra, more than ten directors and partners from McKinsey (including the heads of logistics and automotive practices), the CEO of a national cable TV distribution company, senior executives from an investment fund, and a German soccer professional. With a fleet of about 50 cars, the company launched operations in NCR on July 27.

Current stats:

Revv’s portfolio of cars includes 60 percent SUVs (three to four models), 10 per cent ultra-luxury (two to three models), 30 per cent sedan and hatchback (three to four models). The short-term vision is to popularize the notion of self-drive car rentals in India, and to make the market really take-off through a product that mimics the privacy and convenience of one’s own car. In the long run, all car rental companies take on private car ownership, through a communal car-share concept, to build a future where people do not have to buy cars to be able to use them.

Virtual Baja SAE 2015: OffRoad Competition

BAJA SAE INDIA with its inception in 2007, has come up a long way to become INDIA’s biggest Off-road Motorsports Competition for Engineering Students. With support from major players in the automotive industry like Mahindra & Mahindra, Chevrolet, Volvo etc. this event has definitely made a mark in the lives of thousands of Engineering Students across the country.

It is all about designing and fabricating a single seater ATV (All Terrain Vehicle) which can negotiate various off-road conditions like hills, wooden logs obstacles, bumps, pits and various other tough conditions. With its growth across the years, the difficulties of qualifying for the event have also increased.

The event is divided into two phases. Phase 1 includes the team registrations from Engineering Colleges and a qualifying round commonly known as “VIRTUAL BAJA SAE INDIA”. Phase 2 involves the main event “BAJA SAE INDIA” held at NATRAX test tracks near Pithampur, Indore. Now, we will have a look about recently completed VIRTUAL BAJA SAE INDIA 2015 event and also an interactive session we had with students from TEAM KSHATRIYA representing VIT, Vellore.


VIRTUAL BAJA SAE INDIA 2015 was organised from 10th July – 11th July, 2015 at Chitkara University, Chandigarh which is located on Chandigarh-Patiala Highway. The event was greeted with a huge response from the Engineering Students and around 395 teams from various Engineering Colleges of the country participated in this mega event. This event acted as qualifier to BAJA SAE INDIA 2016 main event. The major objective of this event was to judge the designs and feasibility of ATV’s being proposed by various participating teams. A test for automotive general knowledge and BAJA SAE INDIA 2016 rule book guidelines was also included for the first time.

All the teams were required to present the designs of their ATV’s to the experts from the automotive industry. An interactive presentation majorly includes basic dimensional lay out of the vehicle, roll cage design, virtual simulations using CAE (Computer Aided Engineering) software to test the vehicle at design stage itself, suspension and steering design, power-train system, brakes systems , driver ergonomics, electrical wiring and safety aspects and innovations being proposed in the vehicle.

Considering the tough conditions for the vehicle to comply with in the main event, the students needs to put a lot of effort in making successful designs and which eventually plays very important role in qualifying for the main event.  At the end of the day, 179 teams were only selected for the main event and only these teams would be allowed to go for fabricating their off-road buggy and race it for the main event.

We had an interaction with students of TEAM KSHATRIYA from VIT, Vellore who were positioned 2nd in the VIRTUAL BAJA SAE INDIA 2015 and also secured overall 3rd position at BAJA SAE INDIA 2015.

Q.1. Hello, Team Kshatriya! Can you brief us about the history of TEAM KSHATRIYA?


Team Kshatriya was founded in the year 2006, by a group of dedicated Mechanical Engineering students of VIT, Vellore. We are an off-road racing team fueled by passion and driven by desire that has grown in strength ever since its inception. What defines us is our nine long years of experience in BAJA Racing. 9 years, 8 cars, 13 trophies and 2 podium finishes are what have been achieved till date.

Q.2 How do you feel about winning the 3rd position in BAJA SAE INDIA 2015 and now the 2nd position in Virtual BAJA SAE India 2015?


To most of them, it would be a moment to take pride in, and so is for us. The hard work and sleepless nights did pay off eventually. Not to mention, we are not yet stopping. It’s only a milestone crossed with many more to come.

Q.3 What is the driving force that imparts this consistency in an event such rigorous?


We believe that winning isn’t getting ahead of others; it’s getting ahead of yourself. Learning from previous mistakes and incrementing our efforts every year adjunct with hard work in the right way is the key to success.

Q.4 What are the difficulties that you are facing?


A large number of innovations require even a larger funding, and that is where we are lacking for now. We have taken considerable initiatives in publicizing our works. We need people to know who we are and what we do.

Q.5 What are your upcoming plans?


A lot of innovations have been designed and are to be incorporated within the vehicle. Now, when it comes to BAJA, it is all about the endurance and sustainability in tough terrains hence the innovations are to be tested for the same. That is what we are up to for now.

So, here was TEAM KSHATRIYA moving ahead for the main event with lots of experience in their baggage. We wish them good luck for BAJA SAE INDIA 2016.

Hmmm….A 3-wheeled car, where have I seen it before? Ah, yes this car reminds me of the Mr. Bean series. The Blue car in that series was the handicapped cousin of all cars, due to its 3-wheel base. The Peel 50 happens to be the smallest automobile to ever go into production. Interestingly weird right?

Cam Van: Because 1 camera is just too lame:

In 1993, Harrod Blank had this weird idea to cover his car with cameras and to drive it around to take pictures of people on the streets. At the end of the dream, Harrod looked at pictures taken with the van of faces frozen in the moment of awe, pictures so powerful that the next morning he decided to attempt to build such a vehicle in reality. Soon after, his friends accompanied him for the next 2 years into building this dream cam van.

Well, this experiment was nothing short of crazy. The grass-loving (keeping my imagination open to all sorts of grass) owner decided to allow Mother Nature do her thing to the car. Oddly enough, the car looks fine. I’m guessing that this car must be hybrid and runs on some green fluid (something similar to mountain due :P)

Judging by the look of this car that has been precisely cut into half, I can only imagine the amount of things that had to be literally be severed.

Built by Jay “Hollywood”Ohrberg, this Limo named American dream was 100 feet long that was powered by 2-Cadillac V8’s and ran on 26 wheels with a pool and a helipad (that’s right, helipad) at the back. With a seating capacity of 75 people, its definitely one heck of a ride.

Face Off: Honda Mobilio vs Renault Lodgy

The MPV segment is no longer the small, largely unpopulated section of the Indian car market. The massive success of the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga breathed new life into the stagnating MPV segment. This new class of vehicles, dubbed compact MPVs offered the space and comfort of conventional SUVs without the high price tags. As a result, customers swarmed in numbers at the prospect of owning a car that could double up as a family vacation getaway vehicle.

Here in India, the compact MPV segment is currently led by the recently launched Honda Mobilio. The car’s stylish exterior and its revered Japanese background helped displace Maruti Suzuki from the top spot. With the massive success garnered by Honda’s first foray into this segment, French manufacturer Renault has also introduced its own Lodgy MPV from the Indian market. Extremely popular overseas, the Lodgy hopes to loosen the strong foothold held by the Japanese here in India.


Honda Mobilio:

Honda offers the Mobilio with an unconventional set of variants. Aside from the regular petrol and diesel models, the Japanese automaker also offers a diesel only RS version that adds tastefully done cosmetic changes. We take a look at what the range topping RS version has to offer in terms of aesthetics.

The Mobilio RS sports projector headlights with LEDs, high end alloy wheels, tailgate spoiler and generous bits of chrome all around. The RS variant massively improves on the MPV’s aesthetics.

Renault Lodgy:

The Renault adopts a radically different design philosophy as compared to the Mobilio. While the Mobilio features signature Japanese styling that greatly appeals to the youth, the Lodgy adopts a far more neutral styling approach that is not targeted at any specific . The only defining characteristics of the French MPV are the large Renault Badge and a three strip chrome grille.

Winner: Honda Mobilio RS


Honda Mobilio:

The Mobilio’s dashboard is quite minimal. The signature asymmetric layout and analogue dials for the air conditioning may not be to everyone’s liking. However, what the Honda MPV lacks in terms of creature comforts, it more than makes up for in terms of space. The MPV offers more space than any of its competitors by significantly reducing the thickness of each passenger seat’s back support. While this increases interior space, the comfort is sure to have been compromised.

Renault Lodgy:

Renault offers a rather premium interior for the Lodgy MPV. Diamond quilted leather seats, adjustable headrests for all passengers, touchscreen infotainment system and arm rests for the front and middle passenger rows add to the upmarket feel of the French MPV. The Lodgy’s beige and chocolate brown color scheme that may not go with every paint job on offer.

Compared to the Honda Mobilio, the Renault Lodgy offers a far more upmarket feel in terms of interiors. The feature loaded center console, symmetric dashboard and thicker backrests are sure to provide a far more comfortable ride experience.

Honda Mobilio:

The Japanese car maker offers the Mobilio is both petrol and diesel versions. Honda has fitted the diesel variant with an engine from its all new i-DTEC series of engines. The 1.5 l diesel mill seen earlier on the Amaze and City produces 99 hp at 3600 RPM and a peak torque of 200 Nm @ 1750 RPM. Power is sent to the front wheels via a 5 speed manual gearbox.

The petrol variant is powered by the manufacturer’s 1.5 l i-VTEC engine that produces 117 hp @ 6600 RPM and 145 Nm torque @ 4600 RPM. Honda has also paired the petrol Mobilio with a 5 speed manual ‘box. Sadly however, Honda has not released any news of an automatic variant.

Renault Lodgy:

While the Honda Mobilio caters to both the petrol and diesel customer base, Renault has opted to focus only on the diesel MPV market with the Lodgy. All variants of the Lodgy MPV are powered by a 1.5 l dCi unit. However, to allow for a wider price range across its models, the French car manufacturer offers the diesel in two states of tune. Lower variants produce 84 bhp @ 3750 RPM and 200 Nm of torque at 1900 RPM while the more expensive variants produce 108 hp @4000 RPM and a peak torque of 245 Nm at 1750 RPM. The 84 hp variant is paired with a 5 speed manual while the more powerful model is paired with a 6 speed manual.

Honda has always been known for its engineering ingenuity and the Mobilio is no exception. Although the Japanese automaker has created the Mobilio MPV with parts borrowed from other cars in its lineup, the combination works beautifully. Renault’s lack of petrol engine may prove fatal in the long run.

The face off ends in a draw. The Honda Mobilio and Renault Lodgy complement each other. What one lacks, the other has. While the Lodgy isn’t the most stylish option in this segment, it offers more creature comforts than its Honda counterpart. At the same time, the Lodgy could have used more versatile engine options to service a wider audience.
