The Art Of Metalworking – 2015 Kawasaki Vulcan

"Vulcan S"

First time biker and you really don’t mind hitting the roads? Speed isn’t a concern and neither is the price?

Vulcan is the name of Kawasaki’s custom or cruiser bikes. These bikes have been around since 1984 and they’ve ranged from 125 cc to 2053 cc. These bikes are spectacular and powerful. A rare combination found in bikes these days.

Picking a new bike is not unlike trying on a new pair of shoes, and it is here that the all-new Kawasaki Vulcan S Ergo-Fit concept provides a fresh approach to those looking for a fantastic and powerful bike. More so, you would love the Vulcan because it gets your customized touch to it.

Kawasaki has always been known for building some of the sturdiest bikes in the market and the company didn’t pull any punches telling the world that the Vulcan S was designed to a be a stable road runner for riders of varying sizes. That’s quite an interesting concept that sounds pretty revolutionary.

Ergo-Fit Centers:

Most Kawasaki dealers have signed on as Ergo-Fit Centers, which allows prospective buyers to mix and match dealer-installed seat, footpeg, and handlebar options at time of purchase for no additional cost. The Vulcan’s forward-mounted pegs offer a trio of mounting points spanning a three-inch range, an alteration that requires an appropriate length shift rod. Likewise, three sculpted seats are available, in reduced-, mid-, or extended-reach form. Additionally, the pullback-style handlebar comes in two flavors, a mid-reach design and a reduced-reach bar that places the grips 1.4 inches closer to the rider.

"Ergo Fit"

Vulcan:

Vulcan has been a mainstay of Japanese cruisers for decades. It combines the precise engineering Kawasaki is known for with a modern style that can’t be beat. Perhaps one of the best beginner cruisers available right now is the Vulcan type S. Imagine the looks of the Harley V-rod at less than half the price. Now that is bound to get some attention!

"Kawasaki Vulcan S"

Engine:

The all-new Vulcan from Kawasaki comes powered by a liquid-cooled 649 cc parallel twin engine that is derived from the Ninja 650. This is a fuel-injected DOHC eight-valve motor with revised cam profiles, plus a modified intake tract, exhaust, and ECU. These changes, along with a 28 percent increase in flywheel mass, have resulted in improved low- and mid-range response and smoother overall operation. The power delivery of this bike is very linear.

Design language:

The Vulcan from Kawasaki is everything you’d want in a cruiser, at least as far as its design goes. All the elements of a tried-and-true cruiser are there. From the teardrop-shaped fuel tank to the inverted triangular headlights and the wide handlebars, the Vulcan S is a cruiser in every sense of the word. But the thing about the Vulcan that really stands out is its capability to be customized depending on the rider. Yeah, bikes aren’t as easily customizable as cars so having this feature is definitely a huge god-gift. The color options are pretty limited, but that shouldn’t be a problem because Kawasaki did the smart thing by offering three distinct color styles. There’s the flashy one (Candy Lime Green), the sleek, classy one (Flat Ebony), and the clean one (Pearl Crystal White). You’d definitely fall flat for any of these 3 colors.

"Vulcan S"

The Vulcan S has a sporty character that is complimented by a nimble chassis and a uber-cool neutral steering. It has a tubular frame and a single lay-down KYB shock that offers 3.2 inches of wheel. It also has well-damped 41 mm conventional fork that is kicked out at 31 degrees of rake and offers 4.7 inches of stability. The ABD-equipped Vulcan has a phenomenal braking ability. The single 300mm rotor/twin-piston Nissin front combo is forgiving, having subtle initial bite but plenty of power when a handful is applied. The front tire tracked well when braking hard over rough surfaces, with surprisingly little ABS interaction. The rear anti-lock cycled quite readily, doing an excellent job of keeping the rear in line even when stomping the pedal mid-turn.

Pricing:

In terms of Pricing, the Vulcan is relatively affordable off-shore. It carries an aggressive price tag of  $ 6,999 (Roughly around Rs. 4.5 lakhs) for the standard trim and $ 7,399 for the ABS model (Roughly around Rs. 4.75 lakhs)

However, in India the onwards price is Rs. 6,00,000/- (Sad but true!)

"Vulcan S"

Any purchase of either of these two trims comes with a 12-month limited warranty with an option to avail of Kawasaki’s Protection Plus warranty.

Kawasaki offers 3-different seating options:

  • The standard seat for people 5’7″ to 6 foot
  • The ‘Extended Reach‘ seat which lets you slide back in the saddle a bit more and raise you up.
  • The shorter seat which is about 2 inches shorter than standard in the tapered section.

"Vulcan S Kawasaki"

This makes it comfortable for any kind of rider to enjoy a long and hassle-free ride.

Bottom Line:

This bike is quite sexy and modern for a cruiser. It has 27.8 Inch seat height that makes it ideal for short rides. It also has Ergo-Fit customization that is best for all sorts of riders from 5’6” to 6’ 1” height. On the downside, this bike comes with a parallel twin instead of a v-twin that might not meet the likes of every rider. Overall, this is an excellent ride under 700 cc.

It’s all about top Muscle Cars

"Muscle cars"

It started with Hollywood, that later became one of the most sought after culture in the world. "Audi RS5"

4. Dodge Challenger Hellcat:

Vehicle Type: Coupe

This vehicle is a feral cat sent from hell. The roar and rumble makes it sound pretty aggressive. This is the kind of car you’d want to go on a drag race with. The Challenger was designed as a boulevard cruiser with a little bit of muscle. It was never particularly good at handling curves or even providing straight-line speed, but it could easily haul four passengers in comfort and had enough oomph to keep it interesting. That all changed with the introduction of the supercharged V8 in the Hellcat version. It’s big, it’s thirsty, and not only can it hang with its muscle car competition, it can beat many of them down the drag strip.

With a massive twin-screw supercharger, forged pistons and high-flow heads, the Challenger Hellcat’s 6.4-liter Hemi V8 makes 707 horsepower, 650 lb-ft of torque, and a glorious sound reminiscent of a World War II airplane. 3. 2015 Jaguar F-TYPE R:

F-type from Jaguar has always been considered more of a quick roadster than a muscle car. However, this more aggressive version offers increased horsepower and a standard all-wheel-drive system. You can call it the gentleman’s muscle car. It’s a little more refined and it won’t do burnouts without a lot of coaxing.

"2015 Jaguar F type"

Engine:

The 2015 Jaguar F-TYPE R Coupe offers a 550-horsepower supercharged 5.0-liter V8 along with an electronic active differential, the 8-speed Quick Shift transmission and an unquestionably sexy shape. BMW S1000XR and BMW S1000RR Motorbikes

"2015 BMW S1000 RR"

Motorcycle performance is everything to a rider. Putting those iron horses to their peak is essentially what brings out the best in a ride. The BMW S 1000 XR is no ordinary bike; it is definitely not for the faint hearted. Well, what else can you expect when you fuse a sporty bike with a lot of adventure genes and splice the DNA of a demon?

BMW S1000XR

The S1000 XR is a beaky long-legged super-naked bike that is based out with a competing mission as opposed to Ducati.

The thought behind touring segment bikes dates 35 years ago, when BMW introduced the R 80G/S, an adventure-touring bike. The inception of the XR series of bikes came into existence because of Ducati.

The Multistrada 1200 from Ducati is one of the major reasons behind the introduction of the S 1000 XR.

Engine:

The XR uses the same 999cc, four-cylinder engine as the S1000R, held in a new aluminum-framed chassis whose adjustable screen, upright riding position and luggage-carrying ability that remind us of the R 1200 GS bike.

The 16-valve liquid-cooled power plant is essentially a de-tuned unit that is pretty identical to the S 1000 R machine. However, the S1000XR has gone through a fresh mapping and a whole new exhaust system. The output of this bike has hence not changed; thereby altering a new and mighty torque spread inline with the engine that churns out 160 Hp at 11,000 RPM. BMW has added an option of a new quick-shifter that is pretty unique and can be found only on this bike.

Build:

The chassis layout on the XR 1000 comes into existence by combining an aluminum beam frame and mating it with telescopic forks and a rear mono-shock. The frame on the XR is more relaxed and there’s a generous 150mm of travel up front and 140mm at the rear, and a longer aluminum swing-arm helps stretch the wheelbase by 9mm to 1548mm. It has non-adjustable dual-seat that is 840 mm high.

Variants:

The S1000XR from BMW alongside the obvious basic model is available in the S1000XR Sport variant. This variant adds more refined DTC traction control, extra riding modes, cruise control, heated grips and more; and a top-spec Sport SE that includes Dynamic ESA semi-active suspension plus touring-friendly options including centre-stand, luggage rack and pannier fastenings. This also carries the sports name to it. BMW says the XR has the riding position and appearance of the GS model but is intended for 95% on-road use. The XR or the base model comes equipped with two riding modes, Road and Rain. These modes adjust throttle response, ABS as well as ASC (Automatic Stability Control) for both dry and wet conditions.

BMW S1000RR

"BMW S1000 RR"

This is BMW’s unabashed Bavarian Bravado, the classy supersports S 1000 RR. This bike, with all the subtlety of a V2 rocket, blows away the establishment with awesome power and advanced technology previously unheard of in a mass-produced superbike. And now, for 2015, the onslaught continues, with the latest S1000RR losing 9 lb weight. While gaining a host of refinements and other features directly derived from BMW’s race development.

Engine:

The 999cc liquid-cooled inline-four, reworked in several areas, has gained 6 hp and peak output is now a claimed 199 hp. On the intake side are reshaped ports, revised cam profile, lighter valves and shorter velocity stacks drawing from a larger air box. An all-new exhaust has eliminated the previous model’s under-engine canister, pairing some 6.6 lb. while the new muffler placement has shifted the CG slightly higher and rearward, closer to the swing arm pivot. This is a significant upgrade (third to be specific) of B<W’s S 1000 RR bike. There have been updates to the water-cooled four-cylinder in-line engine. The power band is much broader with the usable rev-range peaking constantly between 9,500 and 12,000 rpm. But the force is strong with this one at much lower rpms.

Build:

The 2015 model looks pretty similar to the previous models, but there are various changes. The new RR’s lighter frame structure with a blend of rigidity and flexibility offers greater traction, precision and feedback.  Chassis consists of four individual aluminum cast pieces welded together with the engine tilted forward at a 32-degree angle and integrated as a load bearing element. The fork overlap of the immersion tubes was reduced to 6 mm and the steering head angle increased 0.5 degrees to 66.5 without any change in the yoke offset. The swing arm pivot point was lowered by 3 mm and the wheelbase lengthened by 15 mm. The new chassis geometry provides increased rider feedback from the front end the rear wheel, especially when pushing the RR to its limits.

"2015 BMW S 1000 RR"

The new model has various modes for various road conditions:

  • Riding modes “Rain”, “Sport” and “Race” as standard plus the option of the Ride Modes Pro,
which adds two additional modes, “Slick” and “User” (configurable), for optimum adaptation
to riding conditions.
  • Pit-lane speed limiter for maintaining an exact speed in the pit lane as part of the optional Ride
Mode’s Pro feature
  • Further improved version of electronic Dynamic Damping Control (DDC).
  • Race ABS with optimized set-up
  • Dynamic traction control (DTC) with precision calibration in 7 +/- steps
  • New electrical system with a more powerful sensor box and lighter battery

Bottom Line:

If you’re in search of power, performance and pure riding action, these are the bikes for you. The only condition is that you’ve got to have the “Paisa” for that. You’d be amazed with these bikes simply because they are ladies on the street but freaks on the track. Do share your experiences on BMW Bikes below 🙂

Happy riding J

Maruti Suzuki Swift – Ownership Review

"Swift Facelift"

Maruti Suzuki has been quite a successful company that left a huge impression in the hearts of millions upon millions of Indians. Their cars have been used by generations and the credibility of the company remains unchanged. With the dawn of the new era comes the need for change. Maruti in collaboration with Suzuki motors have brought new innovations and newer cars to the Indian market. The Swift from Maruti Suzuki has been the leading hatchback for well over a decade and has easily taken over plenty of challengers. The sales figure of the Swift remains on top of the chart every time. There is definitely something about the Maruti Swift that makes it so popular.

The all-new Swift received a few upgrades and came out with the name Face-lift. Albeit several options to choose from, Swift always remained my favorite option. In terms of practicality, the brand and the vehicle has a very different respect. It is desired by plenty of buyers and its service works out to be more economical over the other brands. These reasons were enough to please the impulsiveness within J. Here is my take on the Maruti Suzuki Swift Face lift version that I bought recently. I chose the Fire Red color that seemed quite catchy, peppy and youthful. Maruti has also added a Mysterious Violet Color but that looks pretty much like a black swift.

"2015 Maruti Swift Facelift"
Maruti Swift Facelift 2015

Engine:

Maruti Suzuki cars offer classy mileage and with the launch of every new car, the mileage manages to put a smile on the buyers face. I chose the Petrol consuming Vxi model that enjoys a few top end features. Maruti Suzuki had tweaked the engine on the new facelift version to add to the efficiency.

"Maruti Swift Facelift Engine"
Maruti Swift Facelift Engine

The 1.2-litre K-Series mill (1148 cc engine) now produces 2.7 PS less power, thus is outputs 84.3 PS at 6000 RPM while the torque has increased by 1 Nm to 115 Nm at 4000 RPM. The compression ratio has been modified from 10.0:1 to 11.0:1 and this helps churn out a mileage of 20.4 kmpl. The car is mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox that is quite comfortable to use.

"Swift Facelift"

Exteriors:

In terms of styling, nothing much has changed since the last Swift that rolled out before the Facelift version. That’s a little sad because competitors like Hyundai constantly keep updating the design languages of their hatchbacks. Sadly, Swift has been the same since the beginning.

"Maruti Swift Facelift Exteriors"
“Maruti Exteriors”

The New Facelift version has a new grille and bumper are new but again, it’s very similar to the old car while the fog light has silver accent next to them. The accents are available only with the vxi, zxi, vdi and zdi models. Apart from this, the exteriors remain fairly unchanged.

Interiors:

The Swift definitely greets the driver since the driving pleasure of this car cannot be substituted. The seat fabric has been changed since the last model. (P.S. The seat covers cost me extra and do not come as a standard addition with the car) The Dashboard on this car has silver accents, including on the door and steering wheel while the equipment list has been lengthened to get on par with the competition.

"Swift Facelift"
Swift Facelift Interiors

The car comes with a new and interesting 60:40 split seat system that comes in handy when the luggage is a tad extra. The vehicle has new and adjustable headrests as well as rear-view mirrors. The Face-lift version also has electronic view mirror system or OVRM that is surely a great feature to have.

"Swift Facelift"
Swift Facelift Interiors

These electrically retracting rear-view mirrors on my V trim make it easy for me to adjust and fidget with the joystick. Getting on with the rear space, this car is a little disappointing because Maruti has not been very generous with the rear seating space on this car. It does feel a little claustrophobic especially for those who are a little tall. The Boot space is pretty much the same and lacks space. Carrying a lot of luggage is surely a challenge with this car.

"Swift Speakers"
Swift Facelift Door Speakers

The Audio system is by far the best I’ve ever seen in any other hatchback. The audio system on this car is married to 4 speakers placed on every door in the car. The Bass and overall acoustics are a mood changer. The vehicle has an Aux in and a USB port that play soothing music. There is also a CD player/changer. The new model has a removable Antenna and the Radio support on this vehicle is quite good. The V trims and the Z trims have Audio systems.

Price: The Vxi model is available for Rs. 6.30 lakhs (On-road Price) which is quite aggressive a price I should say.

Service:

I am a big fan of Maruti’s service network. Although i stay in a hill station, there are 2 Maruti service stations in the vicinity. Maruti offers 3 free services after purchasing the car. The First service is due after a month or 1000 kms. The second service is due after 5k kilometers or 6 months. And the Third Service is post 10k kms. The average price of servicing my car comes to around Rs. 2000/-. Compared to others, this is quite a decent amount and it’s quite justified.

Bottom Line: Of course the new Facelift has a few flaws (which car doesn’t?). The rear seating space and the boot space is definitely a turn off. However, I was amused by the split seats, driving is always fun and I cannot miss out on the mileage part too. That said, the music makes my day too 🙂

Mercedes Benz S600: Safety beyond Safety

"Mercedes S class"

S-class Mercedes Benz has been one of the finest Mercs. Their price tags leave more than a pinch to the pocket, but you are sure to identify an S class from a crowd of humdrum luxury cars. Mercedes has recently bought in the final variation of the new S-class that is sure to add the oomph’s and woos on roads. Consider yourselves lucky if you come across one of these beauty for a plausible reason.

THIS CAR CARRIES A PRICE TAG OF Rs. 10 CRORES!!

This special Mercedes has been developed keeping armored special-protection model in perspective. Labeled the Mercedes S600 Guard, the new car has had its protective elements fully integrated into the vehicle direct from the Sindelfingen plant in Germany. Currently, it only comes in long-wheelbase form with the same V12 as shared with the regular sedan.

Engine:

The S600 Guard develops 517hp (380kw) thanks to the bi-turbo V12 6 litre engine that thrusts 530 PS power and 830 Nm torque and rides as comfortably as the standard-production S-Class despite the addition of heavy reinforcements. This powerful ride is married to special alloy wheels that have high-strength steel rims attached and are wrapped by run-flat tires. These specially constructed wheels can keep running at up to 80 kmph even if the tires have been shattered to bits. The top speed is however limited to 210 kmph.

Build and safety features:

You must be wondering if this car is made out of gold (I thought the same)

However, this vehicle carries military-standard small-arms projectiles. The vehicle can withstand any sort of attack. Some of them include armor resisting military-standard small-arms projectiles; hand grenade fragments other explosive charges. Additional safety features include run-flat tyres, a self-sealing fuel tank and a fire-extinguishing system. That mentioned, the S600 Guard still features most of the technical innovations from the already safe Mercedes S-Class. These include the latest braking assistance and brake force distribution features as well as night vision. The car of choice for up-and-coming dictators of small African countries just got better. The new Mercedes-Benz S-Guard is the logical continuation of an almost 80-year unbroken tradition in the development of special-protection vehicles.

Vastly experienced specialists working on the principle of integrated special protection produce this new top-of-the-range Guard model in Sindelfingen, Germany. In effect this means that, rather than retrofitting the protective elements in the doors, rear wall, side panels, roof lining and firewall etc. of an already finished vehicle, they fully integrate them into the body shell on a dedicated production line. All the body-structure reinforcements required due to the extra weight of the protective elements can therefore be incorporated right from the start. The resulting vehicles offer hallmark Mercedes-Benz build quality combined with comprehensive Highest Protection, including in those areas where post-production access would be all but impossible. The insides of the broad glass get a covering of poly-carbonate and several areas of the car is functioned with heat-resistant synthetic fibers called ‘Aramide’. Getting inside is close to impossible.

Interior Comfort:

The S-Class interior space concept, which makes for a first-class ambiance combined with outstanding ride comfort for all the occupants, not to mention effortlessly superior handling, remains virtually unaffected. Furthermore, generously dimension-ed chassis components and twin-caliper front brakes lend the Mercedes-Benz S-Guard Saloon hallmark Mercedes handling qualities and provide the driver with an optimal driving feel at all times. Plus the chassis has been configured so as not to impair the sumptuous level of comfort that distinguishes the standard-production S-Class.

The Mercedes-Benz S 600 Guard is equipped with the same technical innovations that have made the flagship Mercedes S-Class the number-one trailblazer in passenger car development and the world’s best-selling luxury saloon. These include important new developments such as Brake Assist PLUS and the PRE SAFE® brake in combination with DISTRONIC PLUS, night view assist and the enhanced PRE-SAFE® anticipatory occupant protection system. On top of all this, the outstanding level of interior comfort and extremely agile handling make for an effortlessly superior driving experience.

Wondering who could possibly own this safety vault on wheels?

"Mukesh Ambani's new Mercedes"

Well, Mukesh Ambani has already booked himself one J

Although Mercedes has introduced the S-Class Guard for Rs. 8.9 crores, Mukesh Ambani is the first Indian to lay hands on this expensive beauty.

"Mercedes Benz S 600"

Interestingly, even Narendra Modi or even Barack Obama does not have as much Protection privilege as Mukesh Ambani does. This is not the only car that Mukesh Ambani owns. He has also recently gifted himself an armored BMW 7-Series, but his new armored S-Class is not only more expensive, but also comes with the highest level of ballistic protection – VR9. Claimed to be “one of the safety luxury sports on earth” This car has been touted as the best after all.

Ambani’s new beauty was exclusively tailored for him at a special Mercedes-Benz unit in Germany.

Bottom Line:

This did not come cheap. Just to get this car delivered to India, Ambani senior had to shell out 300 percent on import duties, high road tax and of course the leech in disguise (Insurance). As far as reports go, Ambani was number 57 on a list of worldwide customers for this VR9 version of the S600!!!

Tata’s Veerangana Express

"veerangana express"

Tata is one such brand that has its presence in almost every sector. Popularity of this brand is increasing every day and the brand is close to every customer’s heart. The automobile sector from Tata is home grown and the vehicles range from the cheapest car to the expensive ones.

India is huge country where women empowerment is a casual term thrown around with no arbitrary effect. Although it is imperative to prioritize on the importance of safety among women, it is one of the reasons of growing concern. There have been plenty of cases of rapes, molestation, manhandling and everything that could possible go wrong with the opposite gender due to the lack in safety standards and the problem that women face in India. Many NGO’s and similar organizations have tried their best to bring women empowerment into the picture. Bottom Line:

Thanks to its upgraded suspension, lightweight cast wheels, and comfortable seat, the Dark Custom Sportster will likely stay on Harley’s best-seller list for 2016.
